This is an Associated Press MLB story:

NEW YORK (AP) The Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees 1-0 on Friday night, securing the season series between the longstanding rivals thanks to Brayan Bello’s seven innings of three-hit pitching.

After losing the first meeting on June 6, Boston improved to 7-1 versus New York this season and moved a half-game ahead of the Yankees for the first American League wild card.

Bello (10-6) made his third scoreless start of the season and his second against the Yankees, giving up four baserunners and singles to Ben Rice, Trent Grisham, and Austin Wells. The right-hander ended the third inning by getting Rice to ground into a double play after giving up Grisham’s hit. In the sixth, Grisham doubled off Wells first on a line drive.

After pinch hitter Nathaniel Lowe doubled in the seventh inning, Connor Wong hit an RBI double off Mark Leiter Jr. (5-7).

In his major league debut, Boston rookie Jhostynxon Garcia went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts and a walk. A squirrel ran onto the field as he was batting against Max Fried in the fourth inning, momentarily delaying play.

The Yankees fell five and a half games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East after losing their second straight, both to Boston, after a five-game winning streak. For the ninth time this season, New York was shut out.

Fried pitched six scoreless innings and gave up four hits. After 99 pitches, he was lifted after tying a season-high three walks and striking out seven.

The eighth inning ended with Garrett Whitlock striking out Giancarlo Stanton, a pinch hitter, on three pitches. Aroldis Chapman recorded his 25th save in the ninth inning he fanning two.

For the ninth time this season, the Yankees were restricted to three hits or fewer. New York was only allowed three hits or fewer six times last year.

On Saturday afternoon, New York rookie RHP Will Warren (7-5, 4.25) will face Boston LHP Garrett Crochet (13-5, 2.43 ERA).
