Brent Hinds, a former Mastodon singer, guitarist, and co-founder, lost his life in a motorbike accident in Atlanta on Wednesday night. He was fifty-one.

At 11:35 p.m. on Wednesday, Atlanta News First verified that Hinds’ motorcycle was struck by a BMW SUV that had neglected to yield when turning into an intersection. His death was confirmed by the medical examiner’s office in Fulton County.

In an Instagram post, Mastodon stated, “We are in an unfathomable state of sadness and grief.” Brent Hinds lost his life in a sad accident last night. We are devastated, horrified, and still attempting to come to terms with the passing of this creative powerhouse, with whom we have celebrated numerous victories, significant events, and the composition of music that has moved many others. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brent’s loved ones, friends, and supporters. During this trying time, we kindly ask that you respect everyone’s privacy.

The birthdate of William Brent Hinds is January 16, 1974. He played in a band called Four Hour Fogger in the mid-1990s before meeting bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, who would later become his bandmate in Mastodon. In 2000, they would form Mastodon. The band would go on to collaborate on eight albums and compose the music for the 2010 movie Jonah Hex.

In March 2025, Hinds and the other Mastodon members decided to split up after 25 years. The guitarist and singer was a member of three bands before his death: Dirty B & the Boys, Fiend Without a Face, and West End Motel.
