New Jersey is probably engaged if something is referred to as the Tri-State Relay Service.

The new thriller Relay, which debuted in select theaters today and will be released nationwide on Friday, August 22, centers around this service.

Jersey served as the filming location for the film, which starred Oscar winner Riz Ahmed and Emmy nominee Lily James (see trailer and locations below).

Ahmed plays a fixer who works with potential whistleblowers via the Tri-State Relay Service. Ahmed won an Academy Award for Sound of Metal in 2019.

An anonymous operator who represents those who threaten to reveal corruption, he acts as a go-between, brokering transactions and delivering critical payoffs involving corporations.

James, who is nominated for an Emmy for Pam & Tommy, portrays a client of Ahmed who is in imminent danger.

Sam Worthington from the Avatar films stars in Relay, which was written by Justin Piasecki and directed by David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water).

The Bleecker Street movie earned a $5.2 million film credit and spent $14.5 million in New Jersey, according to the state Economic Development Authority, which spoke to NJ Advance Media.

In April and May of 2022, Relay shot locally in the counties of Essex, Hudson, and Union.
