After celebrating her 30th birthday, an Essex County assistant prosecutor was detained in March on suspicion of drunk driving.
Since the incident in March, Bryashia Atchison has continued to try cases, according to a prosecutor’s office representative.
NJ Advance Media reached out to Atchison for comment, but Atchison declined.
Atchison self-reported the event, and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has been keeping a close eye on it, according to Carmen Martin, a representative for the office.
Martin stated that her case assignments had been appropriately modified as needed. Although we are unable to comment on administrative issues pertaining to people, any appropriate administrative action will be taken following the adjudication of the case.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Atchison, of Lyndhurst, was discovered by Edgewater police just after 8 p.m. on March 8 laying on the ground next to her running automobile.
According to authorities, Atchison made a sudden curve into a parking lot and fell out of her car, which prompted a witness traveling behind her to notify the police.
Transparency Bodycam’s bodycam footage on YouTube shows Atchison telling police, “I didn’t realize I was this drunk,” after she fell while trying to stand.
Edgewater Police Department Patrolman Evan Bringas remarked, “You kind of told me something just now that’s a little alarming.” I must thus put you through several tests.
Atchison then started begging the police to allow her go home so she could call her son’s father, who is NFL safety Jabrill Peppers, according to the New Jersey Globe.
Bringas states in the bodycam tape, “Your car is on the curb and you just admitted to us that you were drinking and driving.”
According to the complaint, Atchison told authorities she thought she was in Newark and mentioned that her breath smelled like alcohol.
Atchison had sustained nystagmus at maximal deviation, an involuntary eye movement that is frequently linked to intoxication, according to the results of a field sobriety test conducted by officers. According to the affidavit, police stopped the testing because she was unable to stand by herself and follow directions.
The affidavit then states that Atchison was taken into custody and taken to the police headquarters. Authorities stated she fell asleep after throwing up in the back of the police cruiser during the drive.
According to investigators, Atchison puked after getting to the station and dozed off once more in the processing area. According to the affidavit, she had to make multiple attempts to respond to questions for the police report.
Atchison received a summons for driving while intoxicated and for refusing to submit to a chemical and breathalyzer test. The case is still open.
