Manhattan: Jewish novelist and theologian Avi Weiss has a strong command of language (Gaza recalls historic antisemitic tropes, op-ed, Aug. 10). He skillfully defends Israel’s military campaign in Gaza by utilizing Daily News opinion space pieces. He comes to the conclusion that the world despises Jews and that this is the reason why what is occurring in Gaza is being referred to as genocide.
By stating, “Oops, we made a few mistakes, Israel isn’t the first country to ever make a mistake in war, and after all, their cause is just because Hamas still wants to destroy them,” Weiss condenses all of the accusations of war crimes made against Israel into a single statement. He doesn’t address the possibility of another Hamas invasion of Israel, but he wanted to make room for his other defenses. What pro-Israel Daily News article would be complete without the necessary lesson on antisemitism’s history? He questions why other areas where terrible things are occurring aren’t making the globe angry. He then shifts his focus to Israel’s extraordinary humanitarian efforts in Gaza, which are unparalleled by any other nation.
What other term would he use to characterize the situation in Gaza if he didn’t like the phrase “genocide”? Which term best sums up the nearly two million people who have been displaced, the destruction of over 90% of their housing, sewage and water treatment systems, power, all of their schools, hospitals, and mosques? What term best sums up the murder of almost 60,000 civilians? What does it mean to drop bombs on women and children who were sleeping in chilly tents? What does it mean for hungry youngsters to be killed by gunshots while begging for food at distribution sites? By all means, use a better term than “genocide” to describe all of it. Justified is one term, though, that you are not allowed to use.Davies, Steven
Brooklyn: Every day, I eagerly read The News and must offer my opinion. How fortunate we are to rely on technology in our daily lives. We all use Waze, Firewall, and at least 60 more things for personal or medical purposes. You know who created all of these incredible products? Israel. Look up the inventions that Israel is credited with creating online rather than harboring hatred toward them. In the absence of Israeli technology, road maps would be used. Do you recall them? Consider using a pill camera to examine your body. That was invented in Israel. Learn to express gratitude instead of hatred.Blitman, Civia
Manhattan: Another expensive and useless project that the erratic President Trump is yelling about to divert attention from his administration’s egregious shortcomings in the areas of the economy, international relations, the environment, and more is the deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C. Since his stunt in L.A. worked so well, I suppose he’s doing this now. After weeks of boredom and demoralization, the National Guard withdrew from that city. Well done for attempting to replicate that failure.Mark Richard
Darien, Connecticut: Now, the felon wants to eradicate D.C.’s homeless population. Tell him that there are homeless people in every state. Don’t bother D.C.Dan Singer
Tamarac, Fla.: According to data gathered by police departments, crime may be declining in D.C. as a result of the National Guard. It has occasionally been demonstrated that data is distorted. According to press reports, crime appears to be ongoing, whether it occurs in public or at home. This indicates to me that the safety message is not being followed, much like with guns. Numerous factors contribute to crime, including peer pressure, poverty, family dynamics, and the popularity of action films. Communities, families, social service agencies, and jails all put up a lot of effort to address issues when they arise. Living in safety and tranquility is crucial. Perhaps federal law enforcement will assist. We’ll watch.Cohen, Louis
Bronx: Having grown up on a farm in Ireland, I have some knowledge of horses—apparently far more than those opposed to carriage horses providing rides in Central Park. Horses are sentient creatures. Sometimes they become ill and pass away for no apparent reason. People, sheep, cows, and horses all experience it. Many horses lack stables, let alone stables with stablemen on duty around-the-clock. Two annual physicals are not necessary for the majority of horses. The carriage horses do. Don’t bother the carriage drivers and horses.Brien, Mary O.
Channel 7 WABC, BronxThe wigs and hair extensions that its women wear while on TV need to be addressed. Every week, the women on The View, Live with Kelly and Mark, the weather forecasters, the anchors, the reporters, the game programs, and the advertisements seem to have more hair than they do, making their words less important than the garnishes on their heads. I hope that head lice, squirrels, or birds nesting there are never an issue for them. The moment has come to trim the manes to at least sheep-like length.Rose Lancaster, Mary
Islip, L.I.: How many more absurd Jardiance ads are they able to produce? I don’t feel like dancing because I have diabetes.Brown, Pat
L.I. Massapequa: In the next election, New Yorkers will elect a mayor once more. Will they finally wake up and elect someone who cares about crime, the cleanliness of the city and its taxpayers? Zohran Mamdani, a candidate who has talked about defunding the NYPD and talks tough about taxing the millionaires/billionaires, is the son of millionaires and also an assemblyman making $142,000 and living in a rent-regulated apartment. He s nothing but a hypocrite who will break the backs of New York s hard-working taxpayers.Michael Greaney
Manhattan: Mamdani just got married in a million-dollar ceremony and took a lavish honeymoon, which should raise questions about his wealth. How does he afford such a lavish lifestyle and still call for socialism?Edward Drossman
Staten Island: It s particularly rich for a Voicer like Rose S. Wilson to take Sen. Elizabeth Warren to task for meddling in NYC politics by promoting Mamdani for mayor and not being a New York resident. I respectfully suggest that you follow your own advice by focusing on N.J., and leave us New Yorkers to make our own decisions.Ellen Settanni
Ashburn, Va.: The American people have elected a fascist president who has no empathy for the poor and no respect for the courts, the Constitution or democratic principles. The people of America s largest city are poised to elect a mayor who is a small c communist, a man who has ignored Margaret Thatcher s warning that the problem with communism and socialism is that you soon run out of other people s money. Many of our elected representatives are content to sit by and watch all this happen. Men and women of principle and integrity are leaving government. Wise men have been forgotten and are like prophets in the wilderness. When will the madness end? When will we as a society come to our senses before it is too late?Mike Barrett
Whitestone: To Voicer Lynn Fodor: I absolutely do not throw raw food directly into the can without a liner. And I use clear bags at all times for each item I dispose of, just as you described. And I follow the instructions exactly as stated by the city of New York, so do not assume that I throw raw food directly into the can, etc.!Marlene Torino
Huntington, L.I.: I read with interest your article on Saturday about baseball umpire Jen Pawol s promotion to the major leagues and her becoming the first-ever female MLB umpire (She s in!Aug. 8). It reminded me of my relative, Albert D. Dolly Stark, who became the first-ever Jewish American major league umpire in 1928. Stark overcame great personal hardship to achieve this distinction. His story, and that of Pawol, demonstrate that any person with the right combination of skill, hard work and pluck, can contribute at the highest level to our great national pastime.Tom Cohn
