Coach Aaron Glenn is adopting a different strategy at a time when starters haven’t frequently participated in preseason games.
Glenn stated that the team’s starters will be on the field when the Jets meet the Packers on Saturday in their preseason opener at Lambeau Field.
Glenn remarked, “We’re just playing.” I have no idea how much the boys will play. That depends on the outcome of the game, but we’re still playing.
For what reason did Glenn choose to launch the Jets?
He answered, “Because I want to play.” That’s why. Our boys should play, please. That’s why.
Many coaches choose to rest their starters rather than play them during the exhibition season when the NFL changed from four to three preseason games in 2021. The fact that teams have mostly relied on team practices to prepare players for the forthcoming season is one of the causes.
It seems logical that Glenn wants to see his starters play, even if it’s only for a series or two, given their offensive difficulties during training camp and the fact that players are getting used to a new scheme. In addition, the Jets have a new starting quarterback in Justin Fields, who has had a mixed camp, and two new playcallers in defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand.
Fields completed 8 of 15 throws, including a touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson, as practice came to a close on Thursday. However, it also featured an interception that ricocheted off the hands of tight end Jeremy Ruckert.
Glenn’s initial thought once we step onto the grass is, “I expect to win.” I do, but I anticipate winning in ways that truly reflect what we are attempting to establish during camp.
If it makes sense, I want to make sure that whatever we discuss attempting to construct in terms of trying to get this team to function is captured on camera because I never want to leave a game. And I find that crucial.
You see, I want the score to go our way. Yes, I do. More or less, though, I want the things we are working on to be evident in every piece that we are performing, and that is what I am searching for.
The Jets have adopted a new concept of using starters in preseason games. Robert Saleh, the former coach, decided not to use many of the starters during the exhibition season last season.

By implementing live tackling during practices, Glenn is trying to alter the Jets’ culture. However, he has no fear of his teammates suffering injuries.
Regarding Glenn’s choice to start the players in the preseason, Sauce Gardner stated, “I wasn’t surprised.” I adore football. Football is my obsession, therefore I always adore the prospect of playing whenever I get the chance.
I was quite certain that he wanted us to be able to tackle another squad because we have been practicing tackling. I’m accepting it and eagerly anticipating it. I was certainly not taken aback. His statement did not surprise any of us.
Jordan Love, the Packers’ quarterback, and their starting lineup may also play. Matt LaFleur, the coach of Green Bay, has not stated if he will start the Packers against the Jets on Saturday.
I’m thrilled, especially with the Jets running back trip to Lambeau.Isaiah Davis stated. On that team, I had a number of guys who were [former] teammates. The crew includes Amar Johnson and Tuck [Tucker Kraft]. I’m eager to go and get some reps against someone else because of this. We are eager to compete with someone else on the field and have that competitive nature.
Report of injuries
Due to an ankle injury, Jets defensive tackle Byron Cowart will not participate on Saturday against the Packers.
Also sidelined for the preseason opener against the Packers earlier this week were defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf), left guard John Simpson (back), rookie tight end Mason Taylor (high ankle sprain), backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor (knee), and special teams star Kris Boyd (shoulder).
