There are concerns among the Democratic Party’s own supporters.
According to a recent poll, one-third of Democrats have an unfavorable opinion of their own party, with some describing it as weak and ineffectual.
According to the survey, which was published on Sunday by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 35% of Democrats described the party negatively, while 23% did so favorably.
Six months into President Donald Trump’s second term, the survey may be a caution sign for Democrats ahead of next year’s midterm elections, as their voters are more negative about the party’s current position than Republicans. Republicans were about twice as likely as Democrats to describe their party favorably, while Democrats were more inclined to do so.
Iowa Democrat Cathia Krehbiel, 48, claimed that the Democratic Party’s reaction to the Trump administration has been disorganized.
Regarding her group, Krehbiel remarked, “They lack courage.” I feel like a lot of things have been going horribly wrong lately. They roll over as soon as they say something.
10% of respondents relied on the terms “ineffective” and “disorganized” more generally, while 15% of respondents used the terms “weak” and “apathetic” to describe the Democratic Party. Just roughly two out of ten Democrats gave a good description of the party when asked to choose their own words. According to one out of ten respondents, the Democratic Party is inclusive and sympathetic.
According to the poll, some Democrats may choose not to cast a ballot at all, even if there is probably minimal movement among self-identified Democrats to support Republican candidates ahead of the 2026 midterm elections because the majority of them have negative opinions of the GOP.
Jim Williams, a 78-year-old Michigan resident who calls himself an independent, stated that although he usually supports Democrats, he is dissatisfied with the party’s rhetoric. He called Trump a bully and stated that he dislikes Republicans the more they support him.
Overall, almost 40% of adults have a negative opinion of both parties. Republicans and Democrats are characterized by terms like “dumb” and “dishonest.”
Meanwhile, about 40% of Republicans cited the GOP’s good traits, such as patriotism, hard effort, and assertions of freedom. Approximately two out of ten Republicans used terms like “corrupt,” “for the rich,” and “greedy” to describe their party.
1,437 American adults were polled between July 10 and July 14. There is a 3.6 percentage point margin of error.
