A Major League Baseball investigation into sports betting has resulted in the placement of Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase on non-disciplinary paid vacation.
The second Guardians pitcher to be taken on leave in relation to a sports gambling investigation is Clase, a three-time All-Star. Through August 31, Luis Ortiz is likewise on non-disciplinary leave.
Whether the cases were connected or not was unknown. In a statement, the Guardians stated that they have been notified that no other players or club staff are anticipated to be affected.
Clase, 27, has a career-high 3.23 ERA despite being 5-3 with 24 saves in 48 games this season. The right-hander was thought to be available ahead of this week’s MLB trade deadline, having led the AL in saves each of the previous three seasons.
I’m not content. Before the Guardians’ 8–6 loss to lowly Colorado on Monday night, manager Stephen Vogt declared, “This stinks.” Since it is now legal, it is a different aspect of our game. It stings that two of our guys are under investigation. It is a regrettable circumstance.
Since a U.S. Supreme Court decision in May 2018 overturned a federal rule that had prohibited betting on baseball, basketball, football, and other sports in the majority of states, Major League Baseball has been keeping a closer eye on sports gambling.
In a statement, MLB announced that Clase had been placed on leave while the league’s sports betting investigation was ongoing, in accordance with an agreement with the players association. It declined to comment further.
On Monday evening, a Major League Baseball Players Association spokesperson declined to comment.
The Guardians’ president of baseball operations, Chris Antonetti, said he was notified of Clase’s predicament on Sunday. Before the series opener against the Rockies, he had a meeting with the players and his coaching staff.

Cleveland lost to Colorado, falling to 52-54. When the Rockies scored four runs in the ninth inning, Cade Smith missed a save.
According to Vogt, the current strategy is to adopt a closer-by-committee approach.
Before the game, Smith remarked of Clase, “He’s a part of the team.” He’s not here today, which is terrible.
In-game prop bets on two of the right-hander’s pitches that saw more action than normal during his starts against St. Louis on June 27 and Seattle on June 15 are the subject of the Ortiz inquiry. A betting-integrity company reported the gambling activity on the pitches and sent the information to Major League Baseball.
The two Cleveland pitchers on leave follow MLB’s June 2024 gambling suspension of five players, which included San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano’s lifetime punishment. According to MLB, Marcano used a legitimate sportsbook to put 387 baseball wagers in 2022 and 2023, totaling over $150,000.
Three minor league players—Philadelphia infielder Jos Rodriguez, Arizona pitcher Andrew Saalfrank, and San Diego pitcher Jay Groome—as well as Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly were suspended for a year.
In February, MLB fired Umpire Pat Hoberg for purposefully erasing electronic messages related to the league’s investigation and sharing his legal sports gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games.
