Florida’s weather rollercoaster continues, shifting rapidly from rainy forecasts earlier in the week to dangerous heat conditions by the weekend. Much of the state, including Jacksonville, is under a Heat Advisory today, Friday, July 18, as the National Weather Service (NWS) warns of triple-digit heat index values through the weekend.
For the first time this summer, the NWS Miami has issued a Heat Advisory, with heat index values potentially climbing as high as 111°F along the southern Gulf Coast. In Jacksonville, residents can expect highs in the mid-to-upper 90s, with “feels like” temperatures between 105°F and 113°F throughout the weekend.
The advisory remains in effect from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. today, when heat stress risks will be most severe, especially during the 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. peak hours. Health officials urge people to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and seek shade or air conditioning when possible.
Today’s forecast for Jacksonville includes sunny and hot weather, with a high near 95°F and a 50% chance of afternoon thunderstorms—primarily inland. These storms could bring frequent lightning, heavy downpours, and gusty winds, though rainfall amounts will remain light unless under a thunderstorm cell.
Winds will remain light, coming from the south at 3 to 7 mph.
Tonight, expect partly clear skies and a low around 76°F, with a 30% chance of evening showers before calmer, clearer conditions set in.
The heat is not going anywhere. The NWS forecasts continued hot and humid conditions across Jacksonville and much of Florida through the weekend. Daytime highs will hover in the mid-to-upper 90s, with heat index values topping out at 113°F in some areas.
With the threat of heat illness increasing, additional Heat Advisories may be issued, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those without access to cooling.
For beachgoers, while the water may offer some relief, caution is advised. A moderate risk of rip currents remains in effect today, and UV levels are extremely high, making sunburn a quick risk without protection.
