Governor Greg Abbott Launches Billboard Campaign Warning Migrants of Border Crossing Dangers

Austin, TX – Texas Governor Greg Abbott has launched a new billboard campaign aimed at deterring migrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, warning them of the dangers they may face. The campaign is part of Abbott’s broader efforts to address illegal immigration and border security, a key issue in his administration.

The billboards, placed along major migration routes in Mexico and near the Texas border, feature messages highlighting the perils of illegal crossings, including human trafficking, harsh environmental conditions, and violence from cartels. Some also warn that migrants apprehended by Texas authorities will be sent back under state policies like Operation Lone Star, a border enforcement initiative launched by Abbott.

“Illegal crossings are dangerous and often deadly,” Abbott said in a statement. “We are using every tool available to stop illegal immigration and protect both Texans and migrants from the consequences of these unlawful journeys.”

This campaign comes amid growing tensions between Texas and the federal government over immigration policy. Abbott has taken several aggressive measures to curb illegal migration, including deploying the Texas National Guard, installing razor wire barriers along the Rio Grande, and passing laws allowing state authorities to arrest migrants.

Critics, including immigrant rights groups and Democratic lawmakers, argue that such measures do little to address the root causes of migration and instead create more humanitarian crises. They claim the billboards may spread fear rather than provide real solutions for those fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries.

Supporters of the initiative, however, believe it serves as a necessary warning to prevent migrants from risking their lives in dangerous border crossings. With immigration continuing to be a politically charged issue, Abbott’s latest campaign underscores Texas’ firm stance on border security.

The billboard campaign is expected to run for several months, with state officials monitoring its impact on migration patterns.
