According to Maine State Police, the death of a woman whose corpse was discovered last week after she vanished while paddleboarding in Maine is now being investigated as a homicide.
Shortly after being reported missing, Sunshine Sunny Stewart, 48, was discovered dead near Crawford Pond in Union early on July 3. She was discovered on a little island in the center of the lake called 100 Acre Island, which is only reachable by boat.
Although a cause of death has not yet been disclosed, an autopsy performed by the Office of the Chef Medical Examiner in Augusta found that Stewart died by homicide.
As they continue to search for a suspect in her murder, authorities are urging anybody who saw Stewart paddleboard on July 2 between 6 and 9 p.m. to get in touch with Maine State Police. According to reports, Stewart was lodging at the Mic Mac Cove Campground, which is close by.
Police stated in a statement that detectives from Major Crimes Unit Central have been following all leads and will continue to pursue all investigative avenues. They also said that more information will be made public when it is appropriate and does not jeopardize the ongoing investigation.
The public is being cautioned to stay alert, pay attention to their surroundings, and notify law authorities of any suspicious activities.
