Authorities reported that a man from Queens who was traveling with pals was discovered dead in a reservoir just outside of Baltimore.

The last sighting of 20-year-old Smith Veras occurred on Thursday at Liberty Reservoir. Before he vanished, witnesses saw him swimming at the reservoir approximately 17 miles northwest of Baltimore.

On Saturday, his body was discovered.

He was swimming with three companions. They jumped into the sea after falling. Brandon Holland of the Carroll County sheriff’s office told the Baltimore Banner that they swam to an island and that he began to submerge approximately halfway across. About halfway over, he was last seen.

Vera’s disappearance led to a thorough search in Liberty Reservoir, which is often three to seventy feet deep. When the corpse was eventually located on Saturday, state teams joined a sizable contingent of local search and rescue teams that had been on the scene on Thursday and Friday.

It is forbidden to swim at Liberty Reservoir due to the risks posed by the deep water, which can get very cold in some areas.

In a Facebook post, the Carroll County sheriff’s office stated that investigators do not currently suspect foul play. The incident is still being investigated, though. We send our deepest sympathies to Smith Veras’s family and loved ones during this terrible time.

According to published sources, at least two other people have perished at Liberty Reservoir since 2010. A guy was accused of animal cruelty in 2017 after disposing of his dog’s remains in a reservoir.
