Aaron Boone remains confident Yankees can be MLB’s best: ‘I do believe that’

Manager Aaron Boone spoke to the squad after the Yankees were thrashed in Toronto.

According to Jazz Chisholm Jr., his messaging was brief.

After Thursday’s 8-5 loss to the Blue Jays, Chisholm informed reporters, including MLB.com, that “we are” the league’s greatest club. We were aware of the impending speed bump. When we return home to New York, we should simply ignore the commotion and go about our daily lives as usual.

Ahead of Friday afternoon’s Subway Series opening at Citi Field, Boone was questioned about that speech. The manager said he was certain his squad could be the best in baseball.

“I do think so,” Boone remarked. At the moment, we’re not that. I believe we have the makings of a unique group, even though we are not yet a full team and have a long way to go in our endeavor. That’s how I feel, too. We have played that style for the majority of the year.

For the first time since April 13, the Yankees lost Thursday, capping a four-game sweep, and fell out of first place in the American League East.

Boone thinks that sample is an anomaly for a team that soared ahead to a 42-25 start, even though they had lost 14 of their previous 20 games going into Friday’s opener against the Mets.

Boone acknowledged that the past few weeks have been difficult. It was incredibly difficult for us during two brief six-day periods, and that’s a part of it, but I have a lot of faith in these players and our team, and we must fight through this.

The Yankees’ summer slump is hardly unique to them.

The Mets had lost 14 of their previous 19 games going into this weekend’s series, despite victories against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday and Thursday.

During their respective teams’ slides, Boone and Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, who was a member of the Yankees’ big-league coaching staff from 2018 to 2023, claimed to have communicated with one another.

Before Friday’s game, Mendoza stated, “With what we have going on here, it’s hard to take a deep look at what is going on [with the Yankees].” As far as I can tell, they are also coping with injuries. That team is still very strong.

The second Subway Series game of the year took place in Queens and consisted of three games. The Yankees defeated the Mets two out of three in the Bronx in May.

As of Friday, the Mets have yet to select a starter for Sunday’s series finale due to an injury-plagued rotation. Max Fried (10-2, 2.13 ERA) and Carlos Rodn (9-5, 2.95 ERA) were scheduled to start for the Yankees on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The Mets, however, were not being taken lightly by Boone.

You never know when it comes to opponents. “We need to start playing better as a club overall because it’s all about time, place, and who you’re playing against,” Boone stated.

The way we’ve been swinging the bats lately is incredibly appealing to me. After experiencing a slight pause, I believe we have a few guys who are beginning to pick things up. I’m hoping that will continue.
