Multiple accounts state that a stabbing and fire at a Chicago residence on Friday resulted in the death of a 5-year-old child and the injuries of four others, including two youngsters.
Around ten in the morning, the incident took place in the Logan Square district on the Northwest Side of the city.
In the 3600 block of West Palmer Street, the fire began at a brick home before spreading to the house next door.
A family member contacted 911 to report that a mother had stabbed a brother and a sister before setting the house on fire, according to a person involved with the inquiry who spoke to CBS Chicago.
According to ABC Chicago, three minor victims who had been stabbed were discovered inside the house when first responders arrived.
According to a source who spoke to several publications, the youngest child, 5, was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition but did not survive.
The conditions of the other two kids, who are ten and fourteen years old, are still unknown, although they were also taken to a hospital for treatment.
A critically ill adult victim of smoke inhalation from the nearby home was sent to the same hospital. According to NBC News, a first responder was also admitted to the hospital due to smoke-related injuries.
Chicago police arrested one woman, who was likely the mother of the children, and took her to Community First Hospital. Her condition was unknown at first.

As firefighters battled to contain the fire, dramatic images released by the Chicago Fire Department showed heavy black smoke and flames shooting out of the house and spilling into the sky.
More firemen and resources were sent in after the fire was upgraded to a 2-11 alarm, but by 11:30 a.m. local time, the flames were contained.
