Hints from Heloise: Dealing with stubborn stains, reusing empty jars and more …

REMAINING BRAIN NIMBLE

To Heloise,People who enjoy solving the daily newspaper crossword puzzles are aware that they get harder every week. Hints [blank] Heloise (four letters) is one of the hints for the childishly simple Monday puzzles. They’re not enjoyable at all.

Simply flipping the puzzle upside down will increase the complexity while also making it more challenging and enjoyable. You can learn to print the answer letters upside down in their squares and read the hints inverted.

This is just another easy exercise that senior adults may undertake to keep their minds sharp, and it can make a Monday puzzle as challenging as a Saturday one. — In Houston, Jim R.

You’re all about keeping our minds sharp, Jim! A balanced diet and adequate sleep are also beneficial, as are activities like reading, working out, doing puzzles, and interacting with loved ones.

Because we must care for, feed, and walk our furry friends, some experts think that having a pet may also help us stay occupied and keep our minds active. Many individuals use them as companions. Heloise

STUBBORN STAINS

To Heloise,Many of your extremely helpful tips have been implemented by me after reading your column in the Springfield News-Sun in Springfield, Ohio. My issue is as follows: The vinyl floor in front of my kitchen sink has a yellow stain from the little rug there. I’m hoping you can explain how to get rid of the stain.

I appreciate all of your tips, recipes, jokes, and useful information. — via email, Freddie C.

Freddie Try combining vinegar and baking soda to make a paste. Use a circular motion to scrub the area. You might want to try something a little harsher, like a 50/50 solution of bleach and water, if the stain is really difficult to remove. Heloise

APPLYING EMPTY JARS AGAIN

To Heloise,I find it awkward to pause what I’m doing, find a suitable vase, cut the flowers, and arrange them when a guest gives me flowers from the store wrapped in paper. As a result, when I bring flowers as a hostess gift, I use empty jars of mayonnaise, jelly, etc. as vases. Usually, I wrap a ribbon around the jar’s top. In Buffalo, New York, Ellen

What a brilliant concept, Ellen! If you’re crafty and have the time, you might also like decoupaging the container’s sides or painting a design on the jar’s exterior. The jar can subsequently be used for other purposes, like storing pencils and pens, by the hostess. Heloise

RED LIGHT

To Heloise,I had a tour of duty in Vietnam while I was in the Army. Since red light does not impair night vision like white light does, all of the flashlights used while on guard duty had red bulbs or red filters.

Using a red nightlight in the bathroom is my tip. This has the advantage of making it much easier to see your way back to your bed through the hallway and/or bedroom after using the restroom in a dark house, as opposed to when the nightlight was shining white light. — via email, Jack D.

Thank you so much for your devotion to our nation and for this hint, Jack! Heloise
