NEW YORK (AP) — After missing New York’s first 70 games due to inflammation in the tendons of both elbows, Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees’ designated hitter, was activated Monday and is expected to start against the Los Angeles Angels and bat fifth.
Rainy weather interrupted Stanton’s rehab trip last week, but he was 3 for 11 with 4 RBIs in three games.
Since 2018, the first season following his trade from the Miami Marlins to the Yankees, Stanton has not participated in a complete season. He had missed 364 of 940 games (39%) since the start of the 2019 season as of Monday.
The 35-year-old hit.233 with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs in 114 games played last season. He went on to blast seven home runs in 14 playoff games and was chosen as the AL Championship Series MVP.
Stanton, who was given a then-record $325 million, 13-year contract by the Marlins, won the NL MVP title in 2017 after hitting 59 home runs and 132 RBIs. He has 38 home runs and 100 RBIs in his first season in the Bronx after being dealt to the Yankees.
His right ankle inflammation and left Achilles tendinitis (2022), strained left hamstring (2020), strained left quadriceps (2021), strained right biceps and strained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee (2019), and strained left hamstring (2023 and 2024) caused him to miss time.
Pablo Reyes, an infielder/outfielder, was assigned, and Stanton was activated from the 60-day injured list.
