Amtrak proposes significant funding change to fixes for aging Northeast Corridor

A

proposed 2026 federal Department of Transportion budget

would shift $291 million from the fragile Northeast Corridor, where infrastructure problems and aging NJ Transit trains were blamed for 2024’s summer of hell service suspensions.

Amtrak requested $850 million for Northeast Corridor grants in the agency’s fiscal year 2026 budget. That is $291 million less than the $1.141 billion allocated in 2025.
