NEW YORK
—
With the
Yankees
’ bats in their worst slump of the season, six runs in their last four games, they decided the time is right to turn
Giancarlo Stanton
loose.
After three rehab games last week with the Double-A Somerset Patriots, Stanton was activated from the injured list on Monday.
Out all season with tennis elbow in both arms, Stanton is expected to make his 2025 debut Monday night DHing for the Yankees, who are playing the Los Angeles Angels in the first of four this week at Yankee Stadium.
Stanton was 3-for-11 with four RBIs in his three rehab games. He had three hits and a walk in his first five plate appearances, then was hitless with four strikeouts in his last six at-bats.
After Stanton’s second game, a scout in attendance told NJ Advance Media that he
didn’t think the right-handed slugger was ready
to face major-league pitching.
Stanton, 35, played most of last season with severe discomfort in both arms and was productive with a .233 average, 27 homers and 72 RBI in 114 games. He was at his best in the postseason, batting .273 with seven homers and 16 RBI over 14 games in the Yankees’ World Series run.
The Yankees designated infielder/outfielder
Pablo Reyes
for assignment to make room for Stanton on their 26-man roster.
Reyes, 31, was on the Yankees’ active roster for their first 70 games, but appeared in only 25 while making just seven starts – four at second base, two at third base and one in right field.
His biggest highlight
came last Thursday in Kansas City when he scored the only run in a 1-0 win after leading off the eighth-inning with a single and scoring from second on an error after stumbling between third and home.
