Thanksgiving Eve

Hanover Park (5-1) @ West Essex (5-0)

Brian Kenney: The winner of this matchup gets “The Cup”. Vegas has the Knights as 15 point favorites, but the odds makers haven’t been watching HP since week 2 of the season. The last time the Hornets won “The Cup”, HP seniors Feldman, Tuli, Valvano, Borrello, Conley, Nash, Yasin, Luzniak, Gregory, Zirpoli, Corraro, Sodano and DeMassi were freshman, and Anthony Dellanno was in Colorado. It hasn’t been close the last three years either. No matter what happens, the Hornets seniors finished their careers with a fantastic season including an amazing come-from-behind victory last week against Mahwah. (There is talk of injured players Luzniak and Dellanno red-shirting and coming back next year but that could just be rumors). This week, their focus is on stopping the seemingly unstoppable duo from West Essex of Giancarlo Farro and Chris Bell, who combined for over 300 yards and 5 scores last week in a rout of a good Par Hills team. Wear Essex completed 1 pass in that game. Credit to the Knights’ o-line and those two beasts. Can HP stop the ground attack of West Essex and pull off the upset? Why the heck not? While he had 2 sacks (8 tackles total) last week, Luka Zirpoli was also tracking down runners down the the line of scrimmage and will have to do so again. Owen Feldman and Mikey Borrello combined for 20 tackles and they will have to increase that to 30 this week, they can. Meanwhile Paul “Coz” Cosentino tackled everyone but the refs last week, racking up 16 tackles and forcing the fumble to seal the victory for HP. He will be all over the place on Wednesday night collecting at least a baker’s dozen worth of stops. On offense, senior Christian Valvano will connect with fellow senior Justin Tuli and junior Brett Behre one last time each while running one in as well. One more player worth mentioning just a little bit is junior Mike “Flash” Filippone who only ran for 224 yards and 4 scores last week while forcing two fumbles, picking off a pass in the endzone and recording ten tackles. As Cypress Hill once sang, that is “insane in the membrane, insane in the brain.” Filippone will rack up another 180 yards and 3 scores on the ground behind Sodano and the rest of offensive line this week as well. So yeah, I think that if anyone can beat West Essex, this crew can. Either way it’s going to be a heck of a game and everyone from both squads is going to leave it all on the field. PICK: HP 42-40
George Muha: If I were Hanover Park coach Dan Fulton I would allow lineman/kicker Dan Gregory’s beard take a few snaps as the back in wildcat formation. I’m not talking about the player Dan Gregory, I am just talking about his beard by itself. Not every play, but I’d definitely run a few plays with the beard because not for nothing, Gregory’s beard is the baddest thing about this Hornet team. In addition to that, the reason I believe Hanover Park will beat the undefeated Knights is Brett Behre. The junior receiver has stepped up in a major way this year and has steadily become a lethal weapon while opponents stay hyper focused on Justin Tuli on the other side of the field. Don’t get me wrong, West Essex is a great team. But I hope for their sake they are ready for a dog fight to the final whistle because we are going to bring it. PICK: Black & Gold 55-49
Owen: Hornets 44-19

Friday Night Lights

Parsippany (2-4) @ Caldwell (5-3)

Brian Kenney: Parsippany had a rough year after a phenomenal season last year. It happens. I think they will bounce back next year, but they are going to have their hands full with the Chiefs. Look for the RedHawks to put up a decent fight, with Campbell Pivnick throwing for 200 yards and a score while James Reidinger and Justice “For All” Fitzgerald scoring on the ground. Fitzgerald and Michael Marucci will combine for 20 tackles and a couple of sacks on defense as well. That being said, I think Chiefs Ethan Cavallo and Jeff LaQuaglia will combine for over 200 yards and a few scores as Caldwell proves too much for Parsippany. PICK: Caldwell 41-22
George Muha: I am sad to see James Reidinger to play his final football game. He had an awesome career and I loved at how unselfish he was as a player, jumping into whatever role was best for the team. I’d love for him to go out with a dub and you never know but I think this will be the Chief’s day in front of their home crowd. PICK: Caldwell 30-21
Owen: Chiefs 22-15

Saturday Afternoon Delights

Whippany Park (1-5) @ Morris Catholic (6-2)

Brian Kenney: Dean Denobile had a fantastic game for the Crusaders in last week’s win over Mendham, throwing for 316 yards and 2 TDs with no interceptions. Look for him to stay hot and throw for another 250 with a couple of scores. Michael Quick (who had almost 150 yards receiving last week) will find the end zone this week. The Wildcats hang in there but Morris Catholic has too many weapons on offense to stop. PICK: MC 34-17
George Muha: How about Coach Hack throwing 43 times last week! I’ve been saying it all year, I would love to play on this team with all this passing! Walter Quick had 14 catches for 137-yards. That is just so fun! The Crusaders are really humming on all cylinders and are on a 5-game win streak. With that said, I actually think Whippany Park can catch this Morris Catholic team sleeping if they are not careful. The Wildcats have fight in them and can score quickly. I do think the Crusaders will win but trust me, 2021 will be the year of the Cat. PICK: MC 32-25
Owen: Crusaders 33-21

Owen is 6-year old sports nut who calls it like he sees it.  He loves his mom, goes to bed at 7pm and believes Saturday’s and Sunday’s are for wearing eye-black (even when it’s not football season). Have an opinion about Owen’s picks? You best keep that to yourself because you don’t want this guy knocking on your door.

George Muha has been covering high school sports since 2006. He feels high school scholar-athletes are the most important part of the community and highlighting their achievements on the field, in the classroom and within the community is his personal mission.
