2020 Week 2 Football Predictions

The 2020 Morris Sussex Sports Football Predictions are sponsored by the Orthopedic Institute of NJ with locations in Newton, Sparta, Cedar Knolls, Morristown and Hackettstown.  If you get injured on the field, visit them for urgent care and see an orthopedic specialist with in minutes.  And they’ll see you after-hours up to 8pm on every week day and 8am to 12pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Thursday Night Lights

Fair Lawn (0-1) @ Dover (0-1)

Brian Kenney: You don’t see too many Thursday night games. People better adjust their fantasy lineups in time. Fair Lawn just got shut out by Dover’s next opponent, Tenafly. So this game will be an indicator of how the Tigers’ season will go. I have some faith that Dover is going to put on a show for the fans on Thursday, with Matthew Mercado making a big play in the final minutes to put the game out of reach. PICK: Dover 14-6
George Muha: The Tiger’s right the ship after a rough Week 1. Look for Brandon Megletti, Ben Moctezuma and Milton Ochoa to step up on both sides of the ball to deliver a dub in front of the Dover Faithful!
Owen: Dover

Friday Night Lights

Vernon (0-1) @ West Milford (0-1)

Brian Kenney: Vernon got the best of West Milford last year after three losses in a row. Now I think the swing is headed in Vernon’s favor for at least another year. Look for John Kowalski to have another great game (last week he had 16 tackles and a sack) forcing a fumble and returning it all the way to the house as Vernon grabs a victory on the road. PICK: Vernon 17-13
George Muha: It was a rough go for both teams in Week 1 but I expect the Vikings of Vernon to bounce back to get the away victory. Junior John Kowalski will continue to reward fantasy owners who picked him in the first round. PICK: Vernon 30-13
Owen – West Milford

Kinnelon (0-1) @ Hanover Park (0-1)

Brian Kenney: HP lost a tough home opener and is looking to bounce back in a big way. The Hornets lost a couple of fantastic players to injury, and will now be bringing up a couple of youngsters to help out on defense. Mikey Borrello (joining his brother Johnny on Varsity) and Jack Massarano are more than capable to shore up the defense. Speaking of defense, Hornets Paul Cosentino and Owen Feldman had 36 tackles between them last week! I see more fireworks on offense as Valvano connects with Justin Tuli for a couple of scores while Mike Filippone does this thing (his thing is running like the Flash and scoring touchdowns). PICK: HP 34-21
George Muha: Kinnelon’s Trey McDonald 6-5 220-pound William & Mary bound tight end will be a tough target for HP to stop. But believe Mikey Filippone and the Hornets are filled with confidence after almost toppling one of the best Group 2 teams in North Jersey last week. It’ll be another barn-burner but HP will come out on top. PICK: Hornets 39-35
Owen – Hornets

Wallington (1-0) @ Butler (0-1)

Brian Kenney: I don’t know much about Wallington besides Butler beat them last year. For that reason alone, I’m going with the Bulldogs! Look for them to bounce back after a rough game last week. Joseph Conti scores on the ground and through the air as Butler evens its record. PICK: Bulldogs 28-24
George Muha: Cris Verrico will take matters into his own hands in the form of 80-yards rushing and 150-yards passing to bounce his Bulldogs back after a Week 1 loss. PICK: Butler 28-21
Owen – Panthers

Boonton (1-0) @ Whippany Park (0-1)

Brian Kenney: The Boots offensive line just keeps blocking, doesn’t matter who graduates. Hunter “Little Steven” Van Zant ran for almost 200 yards last week, and he will continue that this week, except he will probably add 2-3 touchdowns. PICK: Bombers 48-17
George Muha: How about Whippany Park’s Hunter Morgenroth??? Kid does everything – passing, rushing, tackling, catching INTs, etc. Boonton looks like they are in are in rushing form as Hunter Van Zant and Danny Portas combined for 300-yards. Expect the Boots to win but Whippany’s Morgenroth will continue to reward fantasy owners for starting him. PICK: Boonton 34-21
Owen – Bombers

High Point (0-0) @ Parsippany Hills (1-0)

Brian Kenney: Chris “Capitan America” Evans is picking up where JD Breslaur left off, throwing for two scores and a buck fifty last week. Ty Sallie had 10 catches, which, not for nothing, is a lot for a high school game. They will connect for another score this week, while Dom Verducci cracks the century mark on the ground. Jordan Thompson will pick up a couple of sacks as well as the Vikings roll. PICK: PH 34-14
George Muha: This will be a game! Par Hills is definitely Appolo Creed with their shiny uniforms and Adonis looking players. Where High Point brings this scrappy playing style that consists of hitting hard and being well conditioned. While I do think the Vikings will win, Par Hills will definitely be emotionally, spiritually and physically drained by the Wildcats relentless tenacity. PICK: Vikes 35-34
Owen – Vikings

Wallkill Valley (1-0) @ Hopatcong (0-1)

Brian Kenney: Hunter Nolan anchors a Ranger team that is looking to go 2-0, and he will do everything he can on defense to see that happen. Last week he had 16 tackles, including 2 sacks in the Valley’s win over Sussex Tech. I figure the Testino-to-Hicks connection will stay hot, putting this out of reach for the Chiefs by the third quarter. PICK: WV 41-27
George Muha: I officially LOVE Hopatcong’s defense. Anthony Rodriguez, Matthew Dockendorf and company played valiantly against the defending sectional champion Boonton Bombers with tons of tackles, interceptions and forced fumbles all over the place. Wallkill Valley has a high flying offense and I believe they’ll be the victor but it will go down to the wire. PICK: WV 30-28
Owen – Chiefs

Jefferson (1-0) @ Sparta (0-0)

Brian Kenney: Sparta is excited to get back on the field, and they are going to have their hands full with J-Town in front of the home-town fans. Look for the Falcons’ Justin Eisele to record a dozen tackles and sack but Sparta will pull away in the second half. Austen Frattura threw for 4 TDS in this match up last year, he will throw for two and run for another in this one. PICK: Sparta 48-21
George Muha: Jefferson will have Sparta on their heels early but I predict Sparta will be looking to blow off a lot of steam from their quarantine. Look for newcomer runningback Sam Esposito to punish fantasy owners who didn’t pick him in the first few rounds by rushing for over 100-yards and two touchdowns. PICK: Spartans 42-30
Owen – Falcons

Kittatinny (1-0) @ Lenape Valley (1-0)

Brian Kenney: Tyler “Make ‘Em” Sweatt will have a decent amount of rushing yards, maybe even a buck fifty, but it will be on more than six carries (last week he had 172 yards on six (yes, 6) carries, with 3 TDS). The Valley is coming off a big win over HP and will look to carry that momentum at home. I think this will be close until the final minutes. PICK: Kits 42-38
George Muha: Just so you know, Kittatinny is no joke. They exploded for 54-points in the first half last week so expect them to bring that kind of fire power this week. But I don’t think anyone will have an answer for Lenape’s Gavin Coles. That kid has a gear that nobody in Morris-Sussex has this year. PICK: LV 48-45
Owen:  Patriots

Montville (0-1) @ Mendham (0-1)

Brian Kenney: Look for Mendham to put up some points against the Stangs but this one is anyone’s guess. Montville misses Mike Burke a lot, but Nick Amoroso helps fans forget as he runs for 175 yards and couple of scores in this one. PICK: Montville 27-20
George Muha: Mendham always plays Montville tough and while the Mustangs will look to bounce back in a big way after losing to MoHills in Week 1, I predict this will be Mendham’s night. Look for Declan McKevitt and Sean Bierals to lead the team in fantasy yards through the air in a close one. PICK: Minutemen 34-32
Owen:  Minutemen

Immaculata (0-1) @ Morris Catholic (0-1)

Brian Kenney: Morris Catholic’s Dean Denobile attempted over 40 passes last week and threw for over 250 yards. This week look for him to complete more than 60% of his throws and connect with Zack “Hands” Thomas for two scores. PICK: MC 34-22
George Muha: I am sure Coach Hack would like to defeat the team he used to coach. And I expect him to as well. Look for Zack Thomas to be all over the field on both sides of the ball in the home victory. PICK: MC 32-19
Owen:  Immaculata

Pequannock (1-0) @ Mountain Lakes (1-0)

Brian Kenney: Lakes got revenge on Parsippany and they aren’t looking to slow down this week. Pete DeMarco and Jimmy “The Hitter” Dolan will combine for 30 tackles in this one for the ‘Quan but Kevin “The Jesus” Christ will still get his for the Herd, running for 150 yards while hitting pay dirt twice. PICK: Herd 33-20
George Muha: Pequannock showed some grit defeating a good Morris Catholic team last week. But I think the Herd are different this season. Look for Kevin Christ to rush for 180-yards and three TDs to for Mt Lakes first home win of the season. PICK: Herd 38-21
Owen:  Panthers

Randolph (0-0) @ Roxbury (0-1)

Brian Kenney: Not sure who had a worse week last week out of these two squads. Lucas Spitzer will keep the ‘Bury in this one until the end but I think the Rams have themselves a fourth quarter and pull away at that point. Justin Townsend runs for a buck eighty and three scores in this one for Randolph. PICK: Rams 35-18
George Muha: You know Justin Townsend and company are looking to come out of the gate breathing fire after missing Week 1 for pandemic related reasons. I expect the veteran Rams to come away victorious against the young Gaels. PICK: Rams 33-7
Owen:  Rams

Saturday Afternoon Delights

DePaul (1-0) @ Delbarton (1-0)

Brian Kenney: DePaul put on a defensive performance as a team by shutting out Pope John last week, but it will have its hands full with the Green Wave this week. Last year Delby won by two, and I expect another barn burner this week. I think A.Z. Lewis comes up with a huge interception to seal it for Delby to stay undefeated. PICK: Delby 34-31
George Muha: I told you Delby was good! I know DePaul is loaded but I don’t care. I am doubling down on my Green Wave. My fantasy kicker is Delby’s Patrick Ryan and I predict he’ll have two FGs and will go at least 3-3 on PATs. PICK: Delby 40-34
Owen:  Green Wave

Bergen Catholic (1-0) @ Pope John (0-1)

Brian Kenney: Bergen Catholic is a beast, plain and simple. Ryan Butler can do it all on defense, and will have himself a day this Saturday. That being said, Pope John won’t go down without a fight. Look for Tyler Ruscher to record a baker’s dozen worth of tackles and Trace Healy to come up with at least one sack in this one. Other than that, freshman punter Jack Morgese is going to get some work in for the Lions. PICK: BC 27-7
George Muha: I so want Pope John to beat on these Bergen Parochials but I don’t think it’s happening this week. Peter Delaportas will throw for close to 200-yards, but I don’t think it will be enough to beat the Crusaders. PICK: BC 30-6
Owen – Crusaders

Parsippany (0-1) @ Madison (1-0)

Brian Kenney: Madison played well last week and I think they will pull off an upset this week. Look for Luke Denison and Joe Carfano to combine for 20 tackles and force a couple of turnovers in this one. PICK: Madison 20-14
George Muha: This will be an awesome game to go to as it can go either way because both of these teams are real good. But I give the edge Jack O’Hearen and the Dodgers only because they are home. PICK: Madison 21-20
Owen – Red Hawks

Mount Olive (1-0) @ Morris Knolls (1-0)

Brian Kenney: Mount Olive had all of 5 minutes to prepare for their new opponent last week and did an amazing job. I see Gavin Lockwood connecting with at least two different Crusaders for scores in this one, as well as running for one himself. But Knolls is coming off a big win and Mt. Olive is going to have to figure out how to stop Sean Beller, who scored four touchdowns last week! It think it comes down to a 38 yard field goal for Mt. Olive’s kicker Dan Barra to win it in the closing seconds. PICK: MO 38-35
George Muha: How about Morris Knoll’s Sean Beller? The kid is all over the place last week! I say this is definitely the “Game of the Week”. But I predict Patrick Sinegra and the Golden Eagles pull it off in front of their home crowd. PICK: Knolls 34-32
Owen – Golden Eagles

West Morris (1-0) @ Morristown (0-0)

Brian Kenney: Wow, four sacks for the Pack’s Luke Doerr-Fredrickson last week in a big win over Roxbury last week. I think their defense carries the day again in this one. PICK: Pack 24-6
George Muha: West Morris’ Ryan Brady totally punished me by not starting him on my fantasy team. Of course the kid rushes for 91 yards and two TDs. I won’t make that same mistake twice. PICK: WMC 34-24
Owen:  Wolfpack

North Warren (1-0) @ Sussex Tech (0-1)

Brian Kenney: Luke Van Horn had himself quite the game last week against Whippany Park, but he won’t have such an easy time against the Techies. Look for him to rush for close to 100 yards and a score but he will force a fumble while making 10 tackles on defense to seal this one for NW. PICK: NW 20-13
George Muha: I was impressed with the way North Warren came out of the gate with the dub.  But I think this week it’s the Mustangs turn to win in front of their home fans.  Aiden Smith will rack up 100-yards rushing in the dub. PICK: Sussex Tech 34-21
Owen – Patriots

Morristown-Beard (1-0) @ Pingry (1-0)

Brian Kenney: The Beard will win this one going away. Look for James Marinello and Major Jones to combine for 300 yards of offense in this one. PICK: Beard 38-14
George Muha: How about James “Michael Vick” Marinello and his ability to improvise?? This kid is a gamer and for that I am doubling down on the Beards. PICK: MoBeard 34-30
Owen – Pingry

Morris Hills (1-0) @ Chatham (0-0)

Brian Kenney: The Cougars are thrilled to get back out on the field, while the Hills came alive last week with the sound of Charlie “T” Rex, who rushed for almost two hundred yards and 3 scores. He will be back at this week, running for over 200 and another three scores. PICK: Hills 41-24
George Muha: I know it’s been a long time since the Jurassic Period but some scientist must have genetically modified some DNA they found because C-Rex of Morris Hills is eating everyone alive. Look for Big Chuck to grind for 150-yards and three TDs in a Saturday afternoon dub. PICK: MoHills 30-21
Owen – Scarlet Knights

How We Picked Them Last Week

Brian Kenney 16-7 (69.56%)
George Muha 16-7 (69.56%)
Owen – Didn’t predict last week

Have an opinion about Owen’s picks? You best keep that to yourself because you don’t want this guy knocking on your door.

George Muha has been covering high school sports since 2006. He feels high school scholar-athletes are the most important part of the community and highlighting their achievements on the field, in the classroom and within the community is his personal mission.
