George Muha’s Take

Every summer I visit with all 37 Morris-Sussex football teams.  My goal in spending time with the players and coaches of each team is to kind of look into their eyes to see if there something special cooking for the upcoming season.  And I am pretty good at predicting whether a team is going to have a lot of success based on that evaluation.  Every single team waxes and wanes depending on the season.  Some years that fire is there and sometimes it is just not…except, that is, when I visit with the Newton Braves.  It wouldn’t matter if the team is full of 140-pound sophomores, these kids are drinking the coach Matt Parzero Kool-Aid and they literally feel like they are going to go undefeated and win a state championship every year.  And that vibe is there from the beginning of training camp through the last game in November or December.  There is literally no other team in the area that maintains this vigilant mindset of confidence.  So count on the Braves to go at least .500 on attitude alone.  Then throw in a year like this one where they are returning stars like leading passer Jack Young, leading receiver Aaron Fantasia and stud lineman Jabari Oxley among other stellar athletes and I can tell you right now this team is built to go deep into the postseason.  Prediction:  This is definitely a playoff team.  But this schedule is loaded with pitfalls so the Braves will need to bring their A-game each week…which they will so you might as well pre-buy your postseason tickets now.
