The Skinny & Prediction

The Lions made some moves to stack up their coaching staff this off-season.  Most notably was the hiring of offensive coordinator Jim Matsakis.  Matsakis was a successful head coach at High Point, Butler and most recently West Orange.  He runs a high tempo, score-fast kind of offense which will resonate well with Pope John’s skill guys.  This offense will also help them compete better against the Big Bergens.

Don’t think for a second that last year’s 2-9 record was an indication that the Johnnies stunk.  They just stack their schedule with the best opponents possible.  In fact, last season they sent the most players of any other team in Morris-Sussex to play at the next level.

This year’s schedule is as brutal as last year’s.  But this season they have Matsakis and the strong armed sophomore QB Peter Delaportas.  That combo will help them finish with a better record.

Everyone makes the postseason in Pope John’s playoff section.  Last season, despite only winning one regular season game, the Johnnies were able to win the first round of the playoffs (proof they stack their regular season schedule).  Even still, getting past DePaul and Red Bank Catholic will be the hurdles they’ll need to clear if they want to go all the way.
