The Skinny & Prediction

On June 3rd, Mountain Lakes Nation lost legendary coach Doug Wilkins.  He leaves a tremendous legacy for the school and football team as he coached from 1966 through 2009, amassing a 328- 105-5 record and winning eight sectional titles. Coach Wilkins also created the HERD acronym for Hustle-Enthusiasm-Roughness-Dedication/Desire as a philosophy of team bonding and unity to foster success and maximize players’ potential.  His presence will be missed.

Coach Darrell Fusco has done an amazing job carrying Coach Wilkin’s torch, having eight winning seasons of the nine he’s led the team.  Seven of those seasons he had six or more wins.

Mountain Lakes has the ability to win every game on their schedule.  Coming out of the gate against good Hanover Park and Madison teams won’t be easy but playing them in front of their home crowd will benefit them.  How they manage through that stretch could lay the foundation for the rest of the season.

If you are HERD season ticket holder, definitely don’t make plans in late November because you can expect your team to be in the Second Season.  But the North, Group 2 section is loaded with great teams.  They’ll likely have to get past defending champs Kittatinny on their way to a championship.  That’s easier said than done but if the HERD can stay healthy and get their mojo at the right time, it’s possible.
