The Skinny & Prediction

To get an idea of what the 2019 Cougars are all about you have to look at the 2018 season. Although they finished 2-8, they were up in the 4th quarter in six of those losses. If they were able to close those games out, they would have been 8-2 no doubt. The best part is Chatham brings back many of their starters. And Coach Czepiga understands exactly what corrective measures need to be done. “We’ve been focused on finishing all off-season. It doesn’t matter what we do, we are making sure we are finishing things till they are complete whether that’s in the weight room or anything we do. We are committed to make sure we win those games we are leading in the 4th quarter”, Coach Czepiga says.

You have to hand it to Chatham’s athletic director Bill Librera. Last season he hired Coach Czepiga who ran an up-tempo, high flying offense at Ewing HS prior. The difference is he was able to secure him a teaching position as well, something Chatham hadn’t had in years. Librera’s move is already paying huge dividends as the Cougar’s 9-12 enrollment numbers for football are hovering near 90 players – a Morris-Sussex high.

Czepiga loves to spread the field and score fast. That’s going to work well against opponents like Par Hills, Mount Olive and Hanover Park – all teams that run spread offenses. Chatham is extremely athletic, so expect them to move the chains quickly and score frequently.

Last season DT George Fuentes and DT Tamer Farid were wrecking machines early in the season. But both were knocked out with season ending injuries (Fuentes with a collar bone and Farid with an ankle). Both are back and very healthy and looking to make up for lost time. Every opposing offensive strategy must account for these two or else they’ll be dealing with a lot of three and outs.

As of last season, Chatham is a Group 4 team. So wins against opponents like MoHills, Mount Olive, Millburn, (all Group 4s) and Morristown (Group 5) carry a healthy amount Power Points. Ridgefield CT should be a Group 4 (the NJSIAA will make the determination as they evaluate out-of-area opponents and assigns a Group). However, Par Hills (Group 3) and H-Town and Hanover Park (both Group 2) don’t carry as many PPTs if Chatham beats them. If they lose to those smaller schools, it stings even more.

Don’t worry about all that Power Point talk though. Chatham is pound-for-pound the most athletic team on their schedule. With a year under their belt studying Czepiga’s playbook and following his weight room regimen, they are slated to win enough games to make it to the postseason. No doubt, their state section is going to be tricky with teams like Phillipsburg, Randolph, Old Tappan, Wayne Hills and Irvington slated to be sitting at the postseason table. But all signs point to the Cougars shaking things up in North, Group 4.
