Five Key Points

1. Many call last year’s Mount Olive state championship performance one for the ages as they were essentially one play away from winning the chip.  Many of those players are still on the roster and they know exactly what it takes to go the distance.  The intense vibe from camp suggests they want to finished what last season’s team started.
2. Coach Brian O’Connor went from 1-9 in his first year to 10-2 in his second. That wasn’t by accident either as he’s been successful in everything that he’s done around football during his career. As a player, he was a key part of Hanover Park’s state championship season in 1990. Then he went on to have a great career as a lineman at Boston College, playing under coach Tom Coughlin. Then has success as a coach at Wayne Hills and Hanover Park. Despite being a lineman, you’d think he’s a run-through-the-tackles kind of guy. But he couldn’t be further from that. His style is to spread the field, blitz on every play and throw the kitchen sink atchya.
The Marauder Faithful should get used to watching games in December with Coach O at the helm.
3. If you put New York Giant’s helmets on Mount Olive’s linemen, you wouldn’t know they are high school kids.  Patrick Olson headline’s this group at 6-5, 320-pounds.  The big problem for opposing teams is he moves like a basketball center and Coach O’Connor loves to pull him to where the play is going.  Paul Moore and Chris Cherry combine for another 435-pounds and each one of them would be the featured linemen on any other team in the conference.
3. The athletic department and school board at Mount Olive need to be commended for what they’ve done to their school and athletic complex. Not too long ago, MO’s facilities were less than par and the school spirit was lack-luster at best. Now their stadium and sports fields are the envy of the state and no team packs the house better than MO Nation. Mount Olive is a great example of “If you build it, they will come.”
4. Mount Olive’s schedule is what you’d imagine it to be after coming a few seconds from winning a state title. They literally have no breaks and their starters will likely play every minute of every game with very little rest. O’Connor will likely be looking for younger players to help share the load so he can have his team ready for the postseason dance.
