What is the All Unruly Team? When I started this site as a blog ten years ago my pen name was “Unruly”. That’s when blogs were the fad and everyone used a pseudonym. So at the end of that year, I put together a team of who I thought were the best players that year and called it the “All Unruly Team”. That’s how these postseason honors all started.
But through the years, the All Unruly Team has taken on a different meaning for me. Although we still call our postseason awards the All Unruly Team but being “all unruly” isn’t about being the best, having incredible talent or racking up all the stats. It’s about digging deep when you’re out of gas. It’s about doing the right thing when no one is paying attention. It’s working hard on the practice field even though you may never get any playing time.
Even though we’ve named close to 400 players to the All Unruly Team, there are many more who deserve to be distinguished as All Unruly. As an example, there are Morris-Sussex players who have slugged it out for four years and worked as hard as the players we’ve named. But because of their size or safety concerns from the coach, never saw the varsity field. But if they’ve grinded it out for four years, they too are All Unruly.
There are cheerleaders who literally put on eye black on game days and are just as intense as the players. They are All Unruly also. There are parents who arrive four hours before games to blow up the inflatable, set up the snack shack and make sure the programs are ready week-in and week-out. They are All Unruly as well. There are marching band members who literally feel it is there job disrupt the opposing team with their loud percussion drums and horns. They are definitely All Unruly. If you can’t wait until Friday mornings for our Weekly Predictions because you just love Morris-Sussex high school football, then you are All Unruly too!
If you are reading this and saying to yourself, “You’re darn right I’m All Unruly!”, then you are in-fact All Unruly! To honor you and your All Unruliness, we have put together an official “You’re darn right I’m All Unruly” t-shirt (coming out next week) so you can let everyone know who you are. So whether you are the All Unruly Player of the Year or fit into the categories above, buy yourself a t-shirt and profess your All Unruliness. Plus, the proceeds help us keep the lights on!
PS: I would be remiss if I didn’t thank you, the readers for your loyalty to Morris Sussex Sports. We can’t express my appreciation enough to you for all of your support. You literally inspire us to continue to work harder and harder each year to provide the best coverage of high school sports possible in Morris-Sussex.
So without further ado, here is your 2017 All Unruly Team:
