The Coach

Name: Jason Hurta
Skinny: Hurta is a Morris County guy through and through. He was a stud player for the same Parsippany team he coaches in the early 1990s. Then he went on to play at Williams Patterson under none other than the Godfather of Morris County coaches Gerry Gallagher. Hurta was an assistant at Hanover Park and Montville before coming back to Parsippany. He’s brought a ton of stability to the Redhawks organization that had a new coach every year before he took over the program three years ago. Hurta spends a ton of his personal time in the youth program that has brought great energy to the football culture in Parsippany.
2016 Record: 2-7

The Players

Franchise Player: Apparently Parsippany has become a breeding ground for Division 1 linemen prospects. Last season it was big John Burk who was the hottest recruit in Morris-Sussex and this year it is senior OL/DL John Krevis (6’3″, 255). Krevis might very well be the franchise player of Morris-Sussex, let alone Parsippany. The way this guy works, he’s going to go from playing on Friday nights to Saturdays to Sundays.
Hottest Selling Jersey: Order your #2 Chris Lupo jersey right now! He’s a 5’8″, 160-pound runningback who only goes north and south. There is no reason for him to waste any time juking guys out because he can beat anyone in a foot race.
All Unruly Watch: Look out for junior RB/WR/DB Patrick Lanigan (5’8″, 165). He’s an explosive skill guy who has very soft hands.
Under the Radar: Two guys who everyone will know at the the end of Week 1 is sophomore QB Nick Santangelo (5-10, 175) and sophomore WR/RB/DB Anthony Colasuonno (5-11, 170). Santangelo worked his tail off to earn the starting QB job and he’s got leadership written all over him. And Santangelo is a coaches dream who understands schemes better than some of the coaches.
Benching the Weight Room: Junior RB/OLB Tyler Grieco (5’8″, 170) was looking like he was going to be one of the all time state leaders in Parsippany HS last year. But injuries got in the way. The guy worked his tail off in the offseason and is in unbelievable shape and will pick up where he left off.
Throwback: A guy that could’ve played in any era is senior WR Ralph Jean-Francois (6-2, 170). He’s a playmaker who’s been turning a lot of heads during camp this summer.

Everyone is uber focused on the other big names on their schedule and nobody is paying much attention to the Redhawks. But I don’t know why. They have the players and coaching to hang with all of these opponents. Parsippany seems to thrive with that underdog persona too. Just look at how they came up and stung Mountain Lakes last season. I predict they will sting a few opponents early which will give them momentum going into the second half of the season. They’ll likely benefit from a lot of Power Points from their victories so winning 4 games at the 8-game cutoff could get them into the playoff party. Once there, they’ll likely have to beat section favorites Lenape Valley, Madison and Whippany Park to earn the chance to hold up the NJSIAA trophy at MetLife Stadium. If Parsippany makes the most of their opportunities and stays healthy, there is no reason this couldn’t be their season.
