The Coach

Name: Nick Gregorio
Skinny: Gregorio has a fantastic football resume starting with his playing days at New Providence under legendary coach Frank Bottone then on to Montclair State where he played college ball. He did coaching stints at Springfield College and Kean before taking head coaching jobs for Johnson Regional and Wall. Now in his fourth year as head coach of Dover, he’s done a great job of bringing all of his experience to create a football culture at Dover.
2016 Record: 1-9

The Players

Franchise Player: There is no doubt that Masyn “The Sanchize” Sanchez (5-4, 150) is the face of this team. You can’t help not root for this guy. On the field, he’s deadly with the way he’ll break your ankles. Every offseason I’ve seen him at the FBU camps, refining his game. Sanchez is a leader and if this Tiger team is able to pull off a championship run, it’s because The Sanchize is the glue that is holding it all together.
Hottest Selling Jersey: To me the scariest player in Morris-Sussex is junior QB Christian Acevedo (5’11”, 190). He’s got crazy vision, can read defenses no problem, has an incredible accuracy with a quick release…he’s everything and more than you’d want in a thrower. But he’s also a lethal runner. In fact, he’d be the star runningback on any other team on their schedule. Trust me, when #10 has the ball things get dicey for opposing defenses.
All Unruly Watch: Senior Izzy Quiroz (5’9″, 200) plays like Ray Lewis. He has excellent football instincts and although he may not be 6’3″, 230-pounds, when he hits you it feels like he is.
Under the Radar: Junior runningback Zarrius Nieves (5’10”, 180) is poised to put his mark on Dover football. He’s a big time playmaker-type who’s going to make defenses pay if they don’t overcompensate for him.
Benching the Weight Room: Senior linemen Erick Ojedis, Thomas Smith and Paul Thompson are account for 800-pounds of beef on the line and did a tremendous job in the weight room this offseason. One of Dover’s biggest assets will be these studs in the trenches. The fact they worked as hard as they did, will be very helpful down the stretch when opponents get tired and banged up.
Throwback: Senior OG/LB Anthony Ocampo (5-8, 190) has a motor that runs constantly on both sides of the ball. He’s one of those tough players who always has his helmet on an opponent.

With everyone focused on teams like Pequannock, Madison and Hanover Park this season, Dover has a chance to sneak up on everyone. With their athletic line and tough defense, Dover can contend with every team on their schedule. Teams win championships, not individual players. Even though this team has some talented individual players, this is a very close knit group who wants to do something special this season. “There are no selfish players on this team,” senior Masyn Sanchez told me during our camp visit, “we are all there for each other.” Four wins at the 8-game cutoff might actually be enough to get into the second season. If the Tigers can get there, they’ll only need to win two games to have their chance to walk through the tunnels of MetLife Stadium.
