The Coach

Name: Brian Stellingwerf
Skinny: Coach Stellingwerf has been on Sussex Tech’s staff for several years as an assistant under former head coach Bobby Leach. Both Stellingwerf and Leach played at Pope John where they graduated in the early 1990s. When Coach Leach got the job at Wallkill Valley Stellingwerf thought he would just follow him there but the Sussex Tech administration smartly had other plans. The Mustang football program has come a long way and it’s all because of Leach and his coaching staff. Completely dismantling this group after Leach left would have been way too big of a blow for the program, especially when they have such a top notch coach in Stellingwerf already on staff. He’ll keep this upward trend and don’t be surprised if he’s able to do something really special with the ‘Stangs very soon (Did someone say “MetLife”?).
2016 Record: 0-0 *First year as coach

The Players

Franchise Player: There are a lot of headline guys on this team but if you have to pick one you’d have to go with the Mustang’s 6-4, lefty QB Tyler Crum. Crum’s been playing varsity football so long you’d think he’s a fifth year senior and he’s only got one thing on his mind – MetLife.
Hottest Selling Jersey: The guy with the hottest selling jersey isn’t typically an offensive guard/defensive tackle but the jersey you’ll see the most in the Sussex Tech bleachers is Dylan Beebe’s #77. Beebe has been starting varsity football for four years and he gets the crowd going the most with the way he breaks through opposing offenses backfields.
All Unruly Watch: After high school, senior Richie Hofmann is going to become a real life gladiator. After four years of starting middle linebacker, and coming back from an ACL injury last season, Hofmann is the epitome of a gladiator.
Under the Radar: Two guys that will be getting a lot of press this season are RB/LB Joey Martinez and WR/RB/DB Brandon Maroney. Both are dynamic skill guys who will thrive with Crum throwing the ball all over the field.
Benching the Weight Room: Three guys that made big gains in the weight room that will translate on to the field are OG/C Ryan Marshall, RB/DE Danny Petrasek, and RB/LB Brendan Hall. These guys are the balance of power to this speedy team.
Throwback: Senior TE Shane Samman is a guy who could play in any era. This year he’ll be making the move from OT to TE to give the ‘Stangs a big 6-2 target in the middle of the field.

I hope every Morris-Sussex team rallies around this Sussex Team this season. This program has come an incredibly long way in recent years. In fact, two years ago this team made it to the state playoffs for the first time ever…I mean EVER in school history. If you talked to these kids you’ll find a certain thing about them that you can’t put a finger on. It’s like a chip on their shoulder but it’s absent of cockiness. But put that aside, they are also dealing with the loss of one of their players Tommy Bock who passed away tragically this past May. Tommy is still very much on their minds and they’ve dedicated this season to his memory. Getting to the postseason won’t be easy; navigating a playoff section with powerhouses like Pequannock, Newton, High Point and Westwood might seem impossible. But I am telling you, this Mustang team has an air about them that screams, “This is our year to shock the world!”.
