The Coach

Name: Mike Sabo
Skinny: Sabo is a Rockaway guy through and through. He grew up in Rockaway. He played football at Morris Hills in the early 1990s. And he’s been the head coach of the team since 2004. He always has a very well prepared team and has taken the Scarlet Knights to the state finals more than once. Last season he got the first ring of his career after an amazing playoff run. Now that Sabo’s got the championship monkey off his back, he knows exactly what it takes to get to the pinnacle. There is no doubt there will be more trips to MetLife for Sabo and the Red Knights.
2016 Record: 9-3 *Won The N3G3 State Title

The Players

Franchise Player: Runningback/linebacker Sam Valerio (6-1, 210), is the franchise player of Morris-Sussex let alone Morris Hills. If Valerio walked by you wearing a New York Giants uniform you wouldn’t think for a second that he was a junior in high school. Opponents will stack the box on this kid every play and it won’t matter. He’s the total package, just trust me on this.
Hottest Selling Jersey: A player that will benefit from teams focusing on Valerio will be RB/DB Angelo Macera. The junior’s quickness would make him the every-down back on most other teams in Morris-Sussex. He has the ability to score on any down and he will.
All Unruly Watch: I want to give MLB Devin Caruso (6-3, 210) the Brian Urlacher Award right now because that is exactly how he plays. The 6-3 senior just blasts through offensive linemen like a bull in a China shop.
Under the Radar: A guy who will be key to the run game is sophomore fullback Jeremy Busel (6, 210). Busel is built like a senior and even got a few dunks as a frosh where he nearly ran for 100-yards in one game on the way to Morris Hills state championship. Another guy who had an awesome season at linebacker and fullback for Dover is transfer Jason Baun (5-10, 215). Baun’s moving to the offensive and defensive line where he’ll be better suited for the Scarlet Knights to make another run at a ring. Sophomore QB Nick Carlotti (6-1, 180) will be taking the helm for the red and white under center. Yes, he’s got big shoes to fill after four-year start Daymon Fleming. But there are enough senior and junior leaders to take the pressure off and let the kid just play.
Benching the Weight Room: An impressive kid on this team is lineman Shane Heslin (6-2, 280). The senior worked his tail off in the offseason and actually dropped a bunch of weight. Now he moves much quicker and he’s extremely powerful.
Throwback: Senior WR/DB Rey Almodovar (5-10, 175) is the kind of player that can play in any era. He plays tough and every time he tackles someone you can hear a thud from the stands.

I like the Red Knights this year. Yeah, they did lose a lot of key cogs that helped them win a title last season. But there are enough guys on this team that were there last year to try to make another run at the ultimate prize. I spoke to some of the players and they have something in their eye that you just don’t see in every team. They even told me that they know they are a different team than last year and if they’d make a run at MetLife it’d have to be something they’d have to carve out themselves. The tricky part is they will likely need 5 or 6 wins by the 8-game cutoff to be guaranteed a spot.  And facing teams like Morris Knolls, High Point, Sparta and Jefferson won’t be easy.  But if they do get into the Second Season, they certainly will be battle tested and well prepared to compete for the NJSIAA trophy.
