Players

Freakishly Talented: Four year starting quarterback and senior Daymon Fleming (6-1, 180) will be one of the best players in Morris Sussex this year. You’ll see for yourself next Saturday against Mendham.
Where’s the Beef: Senior linemen Bill Nieman (5-11, 225) and Tom Stobach (5-11, 200) lay down foundation that the entire offensive structure is built upon.
Emotional Leader: Senior runningback Dajon Chappell (5-11, 175) is an electrifying player who can make Gifford Field go from quiet to an eruptive roar with one handoff.
Will be a Household Name: The Scarlet Knight booster club have ordered replica jerseys they will be selling next to the snack shack at home games of junior TE/LB Devon Caruso (6-3, 200) and sophomores RB/DB Angelo Macera (5-7, 165) and RB/LB Sam Valerio (6, 190). Trust me they will be selling them like hotcakes.
Beast Watch: Nobody is going to fear the rumbling and stumbling runningback Nick Walls (5-9, 200) this year. Last year he ran for over 1,000 yards and that was with three defenders on his back the whole time.

2016 Prediction

This year, like that 2007 team, there are a cast of characters that you just can’t help to root for. You got the four-year quarterback in Daymon Fleming who is due for his time in the sun. Then you got the Thunder & Lighting backfield of Walls and Chappell who both can be Thunder or Lightning on any given play. You got the offensive line who come to work every day with a big chip on their shoulder. And you have a defense full of varsity tested players and young guns who all look like they are entering a boxing match every time they take the field.

In any other year I wouldn’t like their schedule because it is just loaded with tough teams like Chatham, Sparta, Jefferson and Montville all poised to do something special this year themselves. But this is the kind of Morris Hills team that thrives on competitive football.

Opponents can anticipate a physical game when they face the 2016 Red Knights (photo by Lisa Mita Photography).

Getting through this schedule won’t be easy don’t get me wrong. But if they can get enough Power Points to get spot in the state tournament I think this team will be a terrifying team to play. First off, I don’t think anyone in the North 2, Group 3 section will give them a tougher battle than some of their regular season foes will. Secondly, this group hasn’t tasted a success in the playoffs so they’ll be playing with house money which is the best way to play.

Since most of the Morris Hills players have played together since grade school they have great team chemistry (photo by Lisa Mita Photography).

Rockaway is one of those old time throwback towns with a Main Street, a corner hardware store and a coffee shop where everyone in town gets breakfast. When times are hard the community rallies around itself. When times are good, nobody parties harder. This 2016 has a chance to see the latter if they get their chance to walk out of the tunnel at MetLife Stadium in December.
