Morris Sussex Sports is keeping track of how all 37 teams are doing as far as qualifying for the postseason is concerned. If we had it our way, every team would qualify for the state tournament.  Once the playoffs start, we rally behind all Morris Sussex teams as they compete against teams from around the state.  We will update this page again to help our readers see how their favorite team ranks.

The NJSIAA uses a power point formula to calculate whether a team qualifies for the playoffs. You can view the rules yourself but we’re posting the highlights to give you a good idea of how it all works.

The power ranking system is the sum total of the best seven (7) of the eight (8) completed games. The ninth game on the schedule has no bearing on playoffs.

How the Power Points Work

For each game a team receives what are called “quality points.” So whether the team wins, loses or ties, they receive these various points: Win = 6 points; Tie = 3 points; Lose = 0 points

A team will also receive extra points depending on the opponent’s group. So for every win or tie, a team will receive these points: Group 1 = 1 point; Group 2 = 2 points; Group 3 = 3 points; Group 4 = 4 points; Group 5 = 5 points.

The best part of the power point system is the residual points a team can accumulate. These can rack up, especially if a team beats a team that has a lot of wins. And these points accumulate for future wins as well:  A team is awarded points for every game their opponent has won, tied or lost: Win = 3 points; Tie = 1.5 points; Lose = 0 points.

There are a few other rules around tiebreakers that need to be considered, so check out the link above. But now you have an idea of how it all breaks down.  Let’s take a look how each team stands at the midway point.

How Each Team is Doing As of:  10/26/2015

Boonton

State Section: North 1, Group 1
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  2nd
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  They could lose this week against Mo-Beard and still be in the postseason with room to spare.  It won’t hurt if they bump up to the #1 seed in the tournament but the fact that Mo-Beard went 0’fer up to this point means they don’t carry any residual power points so Boonton probably won’t move up in the section.  In fact, the odds are greater for them to move down in the section – even with the W (which they should get).

Butler

State Section:  North 1, Group 1
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  11th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  Butler has a chance to make it in but they need help from the section in the form of teams ahead of them losing.  Oh yeah, and they need to win this weekend against Kinnelon.  Kinnelon has had their troubles this year so that shouldn’t be an issue.  But if Kinnelon rises to the occasion, they will ruin the Bulldogs playoff chances.

Chatham

State Section:  North 2, Group 3
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  7th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  It’s kind of amazing that going 6-2 only gets Chatham a 7th spot in this section.  The Cougars are actually on a slippery slope this weekend as an L against Par Hills can knock them out of postseason contention.  However, a W gets them in with room to spare.

Delbarton

State Section:  Non-public, Group 3
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  3rd
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Delby is in great shape as far as the postseason is concerned.  They have Motown on their schedule for Week 8 but no matter what (win, lose or tie), they’ll find themselves in the playoffs.

Dover

State Section:  North 2, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  8th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Dover is on the very edge of the postseason right now.  They can easily get knocked off with a loss this weekend.  But with #2 Hanover Park on their schedule, they can control their own future with a W.

Hackettstown

State Section:  North 2, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  6th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Hackettstown is in a dicey situation by facing Madison at Week 8.  A loss may not actually eliminate them but a win guarantees them a postseason spot.

Hanover Park

State Section:  North 2, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  2nd
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  At 7-0 Hanover Park is in great shape right now.  Win, lose or tie their Week 8 game against Dover won’t have playoff implications because they’re already in.

High Point

State Section:  North 1, Group 3
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  16th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  The Wildcat’s postseason hopes are sealed shut with a 0-7 record and a section-low 19 points.  However, Week 8 pins them against Montville, who is also winless and trying to avoid being o’fer on the season.

Hopatcong

State Section: North 1, Group 1
What Place Are They In Right Now:  13th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  The injury bug got to Hopatcong early this season.  The good news for the Chiefs is that they play a 5-2 North Warren team this week that carries a lot of residual power points.  The bad thing is they need A LOT of help to get in even with the W.  They need teams in the Top 8 to lose.  First things first: they need to win this weekend.  Then the playoff gods will decide the rest.

Jefferson

State Section:  North 1, Group 3
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  8th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Jefferson is playing for their playoff lives this weekend.  They have to beat a VERY hot Lenape Valley team to get in.  The good news is if they win, they are in with room to spare.  If they lose, they are out.

Kinnelon

State Section:  North 1, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  16th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  Kinnelon is a young team and has a lot to look forward to.  Despite being mathematically eliminated from the postseason they can take joy in ruining Butler’s playoffs hopes if they beat them this weekend.

Kittatinny

State Section:  North 1, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  9th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  A win this weekend against Walkill Valley carries the power points to move them up into the Top 8.  They they’ll need teams ahead of them to get some L’s.  This team is playoff caliber so it would be a shame if they get left out.

Lenape Valley

State Section:  North 2, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  1st
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Lenape is in great shape.  They play a very good Jefferson team at Week 8 but win, lose or tie it won’t matter, the Pats will still be in the postseason.

Madison

State Section:  North 2, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  5th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Madison actually has two more games left before they their 8-game cutoff because they play a Thanksgiving game. With Hackettstown and Hanover Park still left to play, they can control their own destiny.  However, both opponents are excellent and wins are by no means guaranteed.

Mendham

State Section:  North 1, Group 4
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  12th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  At 1-6 Mendham is playing for pride at this point.  They play Mount Olive in Week 8 and win, lose or tie their playoff hopes have already been decided.

Montville

State Section:  North 1, Group 3
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  15th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:   Montville has no chance of making the postseason at 0-7.  However, they play an 0-7 High Point this weekend to give them a chance at not going o’fer on the season.

Morris Catholic

State Section:  Non-public, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  10th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  The postseason is not looking like a possibility for the Crusaders.  Unfortunately at Week 8 they play the 0-7 Parsippany Redhawks that just don’t carry enough Power Points even if they do beat them.

Morris Hills

State Section:  North 1, Group 3
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  9th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  Morris Hills controls their destiny this weekend.  A win against Sparta gets them in with room to spare.  However, if they lose they’ll go to MetLife Stadium as spectators only.

Morris Knolls

State Section:  North 1, Group 4
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  3rd
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Morris Knolls did themselves a big favor by going 6-1 up until this point.  They play a very good West Morris team in Week 8.  But even a loss won’t have too much of an effect in the section.

Morristown

State Section:  North 1, Group 5
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  12th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  Morristown is not mathematically eliminated with their Week 8 matchup against Delbarton.  A win will carry enough power points to move up in the section.  However, they’ll need some teams to lose to allow them room in the Top 8.

Morristown-Beard

State Section:  Non-public, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  13th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  Tough season for the Beards this season.  Unfortunately, their playoff hopes have already been decided.  Even if they beat the 7-1 Boonton Bombers in Week 8, they will not be able to catch up in point points.

Mount Olive

State Section:  North 1, Group 4
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  13th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  The Marauders have no chance of making the postseason.  This weekend’s Week 8 matchup against Mendham is for bragging rights only.

Mountain Lakes

State Section:  North 2, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  4th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Mountain Lakes plays 6-1 Pequannock at Week 8.  No matter what happens, the Herd should be okay as far as staying in the postseason.  However, they’ll be much more comfortable if they win this weekend.

Newton

State Section:  North 1, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  14th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  Unfortunately, even if they win against Whippany Park this weekend the Braves won’t get enough power points to carry them into the postseason.  However, this is a young team and if you’re a Newton fan you have a lot to be excited about for the next several years.

North Warren

State Section: North 1, Group 1
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  6th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  North Warren is in a really tough spot.  This section is tight and they play a very good Hopatcong team, who also happens to be playing for their playoff lives.  NWR did a great job coming out of the gate 5-0.  But now they are on a two-game winning skid.  If they don’t figure things out this week their playoff hopes are sunk.

Parsippany

State Section:  North 2, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  16th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  At 0-8, the Redhawks are mathematically eliminated from the postseason.  However, with Morris Catholic on their schedule for Week 8, they have a chance to avoid going o’fer on the season.

Parsippany Hills

State Section:  North 2, Group 3
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  9th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  The defending champs control their destiny this weekend in a win vs. Chatham that will surely get them in. A loss sends them packing.

Pequannock

State Section:  North 1, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  3rd
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Pequannock did a terrific job getting themselves 6-1 this weekend.  The crazy part is even though they are high in their section right now, it is still a very tough race.  A loss this weekend has the power to knock them out – depending on how the other teams in the section do.  So if they just do their job and win, they’ll be fine.  Problem is: they play Mountain Lakes.

Pope John

State Section:  Non-public, Group 3
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  2nd
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  The Johnnies are totally fine.  With Vernon on their schedule for Week 8, they’ll sail to the postseason win, lose or tie.

Randolph

State Section:  North 1, Group 4
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  8th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Randolph is teetering on the edge.  If they can beat Roxbury this weekend they’ll have nothing to worry about.  However, a loss might seal their fate.  The good news is that they control their own destiny.

Roxbury

State Section:  North 1, Group 4
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  2nd
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Roxbury’s completely fine at 6-1.  Even if they lose to Randolph this weekend (which is unlikely), they’ll still have room to spare.

Sparta

State Section:  North 1, Group 3
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  4th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  Sparta is in good shape even if they lose to MoHills this weekend.  Considering the Spartans have been on pumping on all cylinders and MoHills has been killed by injuries, they should sail into the postseason with room to spare.

Sussex Tech

State Section:  North 1, Group 2
What Place Are They In Right Now:  5th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  At one point Sussex Tech was number one in this section.  But a four-game losing skid has them in a shaky situation.  The good news is a win this weekend against Highland Park should get them in.  However, a loss will surely sink their playoff chances.  Considering that the Mustangs have never gotten to the postseason in school history this team should be hungrier than owls – and that’s who they are playing this Saturday.

Vernon

State Section:  North 1, Group 3
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  12th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  Amazingly, Vernon still has a chance to get into the playoffs with a win against Pope John.  They’ll still need a little help from the postseason gods but not a lot.  The good news is that they know they can hang with PJ because they beat them last season.  The bad news is they beat them last year and Pope John has had this game circled on their calendar ever since.

Wallkill Valley

State Section:  North 1, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  15th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  Wallkill is mathematically out of the postseason no matter what.  But they can take joy in playing the spoiler if they can take down Kittatinny this weekend, who will be playing for their postseason lives.

West Morris

State Section:  North 1, Group 4
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  5th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  Yes
What They Need To Do:  West Morris is not in bad position.  A win this weekend against Morris Knolls will shoot them way up in this section.  Even if they lose they should still be okay.  But they want to avoid being put in that situation if they can help it.

Whippany Park

State Section:  North 2, Group 2
What Place In Their Section They In Right Now:  12th
Would They Make The Playoffs If The Season Ended Today:  No
What They Need To Do:  Whippany Park is mathematically eliminated.  However, they can have fun playing the spoiler this weekend against Newton (who has a small outside chance of getting in if they beat the Wildcats).
