2015 Mount Olive Marauders Football Preview

This is a dangerous, dangerous team. Yes, they did just go 0-7 in their division last season and, yes, they have the likes of Delby, Roxbury, West Morris, Motown and Mendham on their schedule. But trust me when I say this: if anyone sleeps on these guys they will put a boa-like stranglehold on them and won’t let go.

Last season they were young and most of their starters where novices and rookies. But 2015 is a different story. Now they bring back twenty seniors, all of whom are going to be key cogs. They are also returning all five offensive linemen.

What I love about these guys is they aren’t even thinking about last year. To them, it was just practice. The way they see it they were cutting their teeth on what varsity football is all about. Now, after a year of putting on bulk and building speed, they are confident they are ready.

“We got some big guys and some good skill position players who all got a lot of time last season.”  Head coach Jared Luciani told me this summer.  “They took their lumps last season because we were young.  We’ll be a much different team this year.”

What’s scary is their 6-2, 180-pound senior quarterback Jason Drury and his crazy ability to run and throw, or run and throw at the same time. What’s scarier is the fact that he has a legitimate Patriot League-esque receiver in 6-3, 210-pound Zach Stanilious who literally cannot be covered and can catch any throw…even if it is a miss.

One of Mount Olive's assets is the fact that they have a lot of players that are battle tested with varsity experience (photo by Georgi Muha).

Defensively the Marauders will be tough as they bring back eight returning starters. Headlining the bunch is Big Joe Demeo at middle linebacker. Demeo is a solid 6 foot 2, 220 pounds and runs into lanes like a battering ram.

As for my outlook, I know everyone is looking at this division and checking off Roxbury and Delby as the leaders. But this team has the players and ability to put a monkey wrench in everyone’s plans. Or even better, carve out their own plan.

I think getting a few early wins will do this team a lot of good in the confidence department. In the same vain, not getting too down during the low points will be just as important. Four wins will likely get them a postseason bid in this division of death and I think they jump through that hoop with room to spare.

Season Breakdown & Prediction

Game to Watch: Watch them against Roxbury. I see that being a fast break, run-and-shoot basketball game.
Position to Watch: Wide receiver. This team has the skill players to put on some acrobatics.
In a Nutshell: If this team goes 3-1 after four games, I think they could ride that momentum to something special.
Dream Season: Making it to the postseason.
Nightmare Season: Not winning at least four games.
