The Rams looked impressive, but shaky in their season opener against Chatham in a 24-21 victory. The game showed each team’s toughness along with many mistakes that shaped the game.
“It was very sloppy. We always struggle that first game, we always, but it only makes us better.” said Rams Coach Joe Lusardi, who was sidelined in the booth due to health reasons.
The Rams began the game with an impressive drive. However, a fumble recovery by the Cougars eventually led to Chatham’s offense’s first score of the game. Then a Brenan Corcoran field goal shrunk Chatham’s lead to 6-3 at the half. “Our offense was sloppy in the first half.” said Corcoran “But our D played really nice.”
Corcoran later helped rejuvenate the Rams in the second half with two touchdown catches. One which was delivered by Senior QB Connor Logoyda and the other off of a double pass by Senior RB James Bertelle.
Randolph also scored on a controversial fumble recovery touchdown to begin the second half by the Rams’ Junior DB Nick Hafner. “It was just a heads up play.” says Hafner, “Chris Flynn almost picked it off and most people forgot about it and thought it was just a dead ball.”
Even though Chatham’s RB Matt Nestler scored twice in the second half, the “scoop ‘n score” and Corcoran’s two TD’s boosted the Rams to a 24-21 win in their opening weekend. The Rams now prepare to face nearby rival, Morristown, in their home debut next Friday night.
“It always feels great to start out with a win no matter what.” Hafner said again, “We obviously have a lot of things to improve on but we just gotta get better each week.”
