Tricky…that’s how I’d describe this season for Joe Mattessich’s 2014 Jefferson Falcon football team. Two factors are making me say that: one, the Falcon’s graduated a star-studded class of athletes; and two, their schedule is no cakewalk. But don’t get me wrong: opposing teams cannot underestimate this squad of young guns because they are tough, and hungry for success.
The Falcon’s will lead with senior runningback Chris Holleritter who has the speed and power to keep games close. Opening holes for him and pushing around opposing defenses will be senior tackle Brian Feti. Other major contributors to the O will be junior Griffin Reilly, and sophomores Conor Brown and Brandon Magnotta.
Slowing defenses down will be third-year starter, senior Luke Bohn, and Holleritter at linebacker. Senior defensive back Austin Blood is also poised to have a great season. They will be assisted by Reilly, Feti and junior Avery Shreuda.
Austin Blood is a very reliable kicker that Mattessich is not afraid to use from long distances. Blood’s leg could prove to be key in close games.
How They’ll Compete
This schedule is not an easy one. North Warren, Hanover Park, Hopatcong and Madison can spoil a Falcon postseason bid. But winning four games at the eight-game cutoff could get them in…which is totally doable. They are also lucking out by not having to face Dover until their ninth game, which won’t have any playoff ramifications.
