I have been watching Morris Hills football since I was a kid in the 1980’s, then I played against them in the 1990’s, then I covered them as a reporter in the 2000’s. There is one thread that is ever present through the years with the Scarlet Knights and that is TOUGHNESS. Coach Mike Sabo grew up in the system as a player himself and instills this long time tradition in his players to this day. On that note, the 2014 Red Knights’ toughness is going to come in handy because this year’s schedule is lined up with a fair amount of heavy weight contenders.
The Scarlet Knights offense is headlined by the big bruising back Mike Dietrich who has the speed to beat out a cornerback in a foot race and the power to run over a linebacker. He, the speedy Isaiah Turner and the talented Kyle Gaeb are a point-scoring dynamo. Ryan Jackson and his horses up front will crack open opposing defenses for the play-makers to do their thing. Defensively Robert Sugot and Deishawn Green will join the previously mentioned players to keep opposing scores to a minimum.
Opening up with a win against Morris Knolls could make the season for the Red Knights. A win there would give them the confidence to ensure victories over the teams they should beat…which would give them all the wins they need to get into the playoffs. Losing in Week 1 against Knolls doesn’t end their season but it does make it harder. When you have a schedule that includes teams like Par Hills, Pope John, Sparta and West Morris, you need to get every win you can get.
This MoHills teams is entering the 2014 season on a five game winning streak. That momentum should pay dividends early in the season.
