1-year-old Boy Drowned in South Shore; Woman in Custody for Alleged Homicide

A 1-year-old boy has died in what authorities are calling a tragic case of drowning in the South Shore neighborhood late Friday night. A 31-year-old woman is in custody as police investigate the incident as a homicide.

The Chicago Police Department responded to a distress call around 9:45 p.m. in the 7000 block of South South Shore Drive, near Lake Michigan. When officers arrived, they found a woman in the water. She was quickly taken into custody and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center for evaluation.

According to police, investigators learned the woman had drowned the infant before being discovered in the lake. The Chicago Fire Department’s Marine Unit recovered the baby’s body and rushed him to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the child’s identity. The woman’s identity also remains undisclosed as charges have not yet been filed.

Police have officially classified the case as a homicide, and Area One detectives are actively investigating.
