Boys Hoops: Falcons Offense Too Much For American Christian, 73-44

The Jefferson Falcons looked to improve upon their 6-3 record Monday night, as they took on a tough American Christian School, who came in with a record of 9-1. The Falcons would pull through with a 73-44 victory on the night.

The game got off to a slow start with little offense and a large amount of turnovers. The score was held at a still 2-0 Falcons lead for the first three minutes. The Falcons would ride that slim advantage to the end of the first quarter with a 10-7 lead.

The second quarter is where the Falcons began to heat up. Sharing the ball between five different scorers in the quarter, having the whole lineup contribute. Although the Falcons offense got started, it was a different story for American Christian. As the half came to a close with a 27-19 Falcon lead, and American Christian had only two scorers on the night thus far as junior point-forward Jael Maldonado tallied 6 for the half and junior guard Reuben Synsmir finished the half with 13.

The third quarter was when the Falcons took total control of the game, as Jefferson scored 26 points in the quarter alone, 15 of those were scored by junior forward Matthew Johnson. Although Johnson accounted for most of the scoring, the Falcons continued to share the ball, especially in the hands of senior point-guard Joe Batelli. Third quarter came to a close with a 53-32 Falcons lead.

The fourth quarter had know difference as the Falcons put a cap on their blowout victory, with a 73-44 win, advancing them to a solid 7-3 record.
American Christian had two big scorers on the night. Synsmir finished with 25, as Maldonado totaled 15.

For the Falcons it was a promising night not just for Johnson- who broke his career high with 29 points- but for the entire team. The Falcons had 10 different scorers take advantage of their 73 point victory. Senior guard Stefan Tisma was the closest to Johnson, as he finished with 16 on the night.

“I felt good today, I didn’t even know that [he got his career high] but i felt good today and my teammates got me the ball at the right time,” Johnson said on his record breaking night. “Coach told us we needed a spark in the 3rd, so I just went out there with that mentality and it just happened to be me who lit the fire,” Johnson added on his 15 point 3rd quarter. “We watched a lot of film on them and came in a did a lot of practice on their defense and offense and that got us read,” Johnson said, on a matchup with uncommon team.

“Coach told us they were more AAU based, so we went into the zone and it worked out well for us, and got some big steals,” Tisma said about their game plan going into the game. “You know they were averaging 70 points per game, and we held them to 44 so our coaching staff did an awesome job putting in a game plan and we executed it well,” Batelli added.
“It felt good knocking down some shots for once. I haven’t been feeling it lately but tonight the ball was just falling for me and I hope that can continue,” Tisma added on his success for the night.

American Christian gets back home tomorrow night, to take on Veritas Christian Academy and look to redeem themselves. As for the Falcons, they get the Madison Dodgers friday night, back at home.
