The Coach

Name: Bill Regan
Skinny: Coach Bill Regan is at the heart of the Morris County football fabric. He’s been coaching Morris Knolls for over 43 years. His father was also a big Morris County coaching staple as he was Delbarton’s coach for many years as well. Coach Regan has run the Houston Split Back Veer offense that military academies use for his entire coaching career. That’s served him well as Regan has picked up several state championship trophies through the years.
2016 Record: 6-4

The Players

Franchise Player: This team is actually loaded with a lot of stars but senior RB/S Derek Ferguson is probably one of the top reasons Morris Knolls sold out of season tickets this season. The veteran’s punishing running style will be one of the main reasons the Golden Eagles opponents will be throwing in the towel late in games.
Hottest Selling Jersey: Senior RB/DB Nate Howell came on with a fury late in the season. He’s poised to continue the rampage that he’s been on.  I predict a 1,000-yard rushing year out of him
All Unruly Watch: Senior TE/DE Nick Gitelman is a tough hard-nosed player in which the All Unruly Awards are all about.
Under the Radar: Three players that will the focus of opposing coaches film rooms are senior LB/TE Tom Cicchetti and senior CB/QB David Kaiser and WR/CB Joe Taylor. These three are playmakers on both sides of the ball.
Benching the Weight Room: Seniors linemen Tom Griese and Billy Tuttle lead a line that explodes off the ball faster than any other team in Morris-Sussex.
Throwback: A guy that could’ve played in the leather helmet days is TE/DE John Van Lenten. Van Lenten’s motor is always running and he’s always involved in all the action.

Prediction

Every year when I write the Morris Knolls preview, I cannot help to think of the one time my Hanover Park Hornets faced the Golden Eagles. I was the defensive end and for the entire game, I bit on the fake handoff to the fullback. I can’t tell you how dopey you feel when you tackle the wrong guy, over and over. That’s the magic of Coach Regan’s veer offense and how demoralizing it can be if this offense is cranking on all cylinders. And much to the dismay of everyone else on this schedule, this group is a very talented team that runs this offense like a well-oiled machine. I predict this is a year that Knolls can do something very special. If they come away with a win in Week 1 against Mount Olive, they’ll get a ton of momentum that they can ride the entire season. This team is built for now and there is absolutely no reason the team can’t be playing in the swamps of East Rutherford come December.
