The Coach

Name: Darrell Fusco
Skinny: Fusco is going into his 8th year as head coach of the Herd and 20th year on staff at Mountain Lakes. He’s done a tremendous job carrying on the winning tradition that former legendary coach Doug Wilkens created for four decades. Fusco is the kind of coach that is always evolving and tweaking things to help his team get better. Because of that, his teams always play with a high-intensity kind of energy that makes them always feel like they are going to win no matter the circumstance.
2016 Record: 2-8

The Players

Franchise Player: The player that puts fans in the seats is senior RB Alec Ratchford (6’2″, 185). Ratchford is a total athlete who is going to play D1 lacrosse after high school. He’s the emotional leader and the guy who will be leading the team in yards rushing.
Hottest Selling Jersey: Two jersey numbers that just sold out (sorry, you’re too late) are senior WR/DB Jake Marshall’s #31 and junior QB Jack Baker’s #12. Both of these tall, athletic types (Marshal is 6’4″, 160-pounds and Baker is 6’5″, 200-pounds) are deadly together in the Herd’s aerial attack.
All Unruly Watch: When you go to Mountain Lake’s games this year key in on senior FB Frank Patracuolla (5’11”, 205) and senior guard AJ Kloza (5-11, 210). Patracuolla a the big bruising fullback that drags three or four defenders down the field. Kloza is a three-year starter who looks like a professional who has mastered his craft with the way he pulls and traps to open up holes for the run game.
Under the Radar:  Senior FB/LB Matt Barkauskas (5’9,” 175) missed his junior season with an injury but he would have been a starter if healthy. This season he is feeling great and he’s due for a big season. He partners with Patracuolla at the fullback bringing quickness to this Thunder & Lightning duo.
Benching the Weight Room: Senior OG Ryan Hatton (5’9″, 175) and senior center Alex Sowa (5’9″, 205) may not be your typical 250-pound hogs up front but they are incredibly strong and quick which allows them to move defensive linemen much bigger than them.
Throwback: Seniors OT/DE Andrew Donohue (6’2″, 270) and NG Tommy Wyciskala (5’10”, 225) are your typical beefy linemen who seem to be the personality of this team. Both of these guys look like they should’ve played in 1982 with the taped up hands and old style helmets.

Prediction

Every team on Mountain Lakes schedule should be afraid…very afraid. Don’t think for a second that the Herd will come into this season with anything less than pure, strong vengeance after going 2-8 last season. I predict these guys come out so hard and fast that they’ll clinch the playoffs before the season ends. Once they get to the postseason party they’ll likely have to dance with regular season foes like Lenape Valley, Madison and Whippany Park to get to the pinnacle. If you are part of Herd Nation, I wouldn’t make any plans the weekend of December 2nd.
