The Coach

Name: Don Smolyn
Skinny: If there was a football coaching mafia, Coach Smolyn would be the Godfather.  This is Smolyn’s 42nd year as head coach at Lenape Valley and since then he’s amassed a record of 322-123-13. That math adds up to an average of 7.8 wins per season. Think about that for a second…  Teams only play a nine game schedule. Yes, that number does include playoffs but still, that is pretty ridiculous. And the best part is he’s done it the right way, by mentoring young men and building them up. Currently, there are countless head coaches and assistants that have played for Coach Smolyn. I’d say the best compliment you could give a coach is to be so inspired as a player to be a coach yourself one day.
2016 Record: 10-2

The Players

Franchise Player: Make no bones about it, senior runningback Troy DuPont (6, 95) is all the rage this season. What makes DuPont so incredible is he seems to float through defenses and is so elusive. Behind LV’s big line, and Coach Smolyn’s run-happy offense, DuPont can literally be one of the most productive backs in the state.
Hottest Selling Jersey: I predict a big year for quarterback Craig Swanson. At 6-4, 195, the senior sees the field with incredible vision and gives Coach Smolyn an aerial attack which he will surely take advantage of when opponents are least expecting it.
All Unruly Watch: Trust me, Rocco Bonavolonta is a guy the opposing coaches will have nightmares about. At 6, 275-pounds with incredibly quick feet, most teams will not have an answer for him.
Under the Radar: Alex Golden, John Spada, Nick Molinari, Brandon Bready, Drew Pickett and Ronald Lucchesi are all guys who most people haven’t heard of yet but will be major contributors this season. Offensive lineman Taro Johnson (5-10, 220) was slated to make a big impact last season but was lost to injury early on. Now he’s back and healthier than ever and will be looking shake things up in a big way.
Benching the Weight Room: Paramaus High School transfer center Gabe Jimenez seems to fit right in. At 5-11, 285-pound he had no problem throwing the weights around in the offseason.
Throwback: Senior tackle Will Ernst (5-10, 285) is big time lineman who can block two defenders at a time and doesn’t stop until after the whistle blows.

Prediction

I really like how this Lenape Valley team retooled. Don’t get me wrong, LV doesn’t exactly ever have an off year. But the way this team is shaping up with their big runningback, strong and BIG offensive line and solid D; I think they’ll navigate their schedule just fine. Where it gets interesting for the Pats is the post-season. A championship will have to go through Madison and don’t think for a second LV would have it any other way. Last season they went 10-2 with only losses to Madison and one being the state championship match at MetLife Stadium. This could very well be a rematch in December.
