The Coach

Name: Frank Marchiano
Skinny: Marchiano is part of the Jefferson HS football lore for his accomplishments as a player. He was also a four-year starter at TCNJ. Before being the head man at Sparta, he started his football coaching career for his alma mater Jefferson. Since taking over the Spartans in 2010, he’s created a winning machine getting to the state finals three times and taking the title twice. He runs a fun, high flying type of offense where 8-10 different players a game have a chance to be the star of the game. His style makes it very difficult for opponents to game plan against him.
2016 Record: 10-1

The Players

Franchise Player: This team is loaded with stars but a guy who will benefit from Coach Marchiano’s pass-happy offense the most is senior receiver, Eric Castorina. At 5-11, 175-pound Castorina is a Chris Hogan-type with good hands and a strong frame that will turn short passes for big gains. I predict he’ll be in the top of Morris-Sussex for YAC (yards after catch) this season.
Hottest Selling Jersey: A guy who will capitalize from opposing defenses focusing on Castorina will be senior WR Jake Zerillo (6-1, 170). Zerillo is a big target and will win a jump ball every time. Go get your #6 jersey right now because they are flying off the shelves!
All Unruly Watch: A guy who is a nightmare for opponents is OL/DL Rob Gennat (5-11, 205). He’s a fast and strong lineman who creates havoc in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
Under the Radar: Senior SS/TE Mike Candeloro (6-1, 205) is a guy who started last season but didn’t get many headlines. This season he’ll be a guy opposing coaches will focus a lot of time on both sides of the ball. He’s a big, fast body that is in on every play.
Benching the Weight Room: I watched Sparta scrimmage this summer and I could not get over the size and speed of senior linemen Ben Davis (6-2, 240), Kevin Carpenter (6-1, 260) and Jason Girratano (6, 210). Teams will need to be VERY creative in getting around these monsters because trying to overpower them just won’t work.
Throwback: A guy that could’ve played in the leather helmet days is senior DB Anthony Esposito (6-1, 165). He flies around the defensive backfield like Jack Tatum and forces more opposing receivers to drop balls from “hearing his footsteps”. Sparta’s high scoring offense will force many opponents to play catch up by throwing the ball. That will bode well for Espo who I predict will lead Morris-Sussex in INTs.

Prediction

Last season Sparta was near perfect, only losing in the semi-finals by four points. There is no reason this group can’t finish what last year’s team attempted to do. Yes, Sparta is loaded with a ton of skill guys. But what’s going to give teams the most trouble is their defensive line. This group is going to literally force some opponents to have more negative yards than positive ones. If there is a team you want to double-down on this season, it’s the Spartans.
