The Coach

Name: Brian Carlson
Skinny: Coach Carlson was a stud defensive end at Montclair State during his playing days. He spent years as the head coach of Kean University and did stints in other plays including Don Bosco. But I’d lik to share a little story to let you know the kind of guy Coach Carlson is. Two years ago a dad of one of the best football players in Morris-Sussex for that year reached out to me to tell me his son hadn’t had any offers. It was early March and this kid was going to graduate in a few months so his parents were in a panic. This was a player who was on a public school team in Morris County and not Pope John, mind you. In passing, I mentioned this to Coach Carlson who knew of the player (again, he was one of the best in the area). Without a hesitation, Carlson told me to have the kid’s parents call him…which they did. Within a month, Carlson was able to leverage his network and had this kid an offer from a D1 school where he actually got some playing time as a freshman. Again, this player did not even play for Carlson. Coach Carlson is a guy who cares about the young people in our area and a big proponent for high school football. What he’s been doing for PJ is incredible and we’re lucky to have this guy in our backyard.
2016 Record: 6-5

The Players

Franchise Player: Openly, the second stringers on this team would be the franchise players on their home town team. However, if you’d have to pick a guy who is the heart and soul of this group it is senior MLB Nick DeNucci (6-1,225). He’s off to play at Boston College next season where he’ll be on the roster a few years before entering the draft to play in the League early…trust me.
Hottest Selling Jersey: If there was a Morris-Sussex fantasy draft, you’d be an idiot not to pick senior RB Berrell Neal (5-9, 200) with your first pick. We are projecting #3 to score 158-points this season.
All Unruly Watch: A guy who is going to go absolutely bananas this season is senior RB Terrance Jones (6-2, 225). Jones looks like the second coming of Eddie George and when he runs it looks like he runs right through defenders like an apparition.
Under the Radar: Junior QB Niko Hroncich (6-2, 190) is the most dangerous player on this squad for opposing teams. While everyone has heard of all the other names, Hroncich is flying way under the radar. He’s so good, even last year’s starter and current senior Ty Hranicka told the coach he’d be crazy for not allowing this guy to take the helm.
Benching the Weight Room: Three guys that men amongst boys are senior LB Jake Brown (6-1, 215), senior FS Samuel Darrell (5-10, 170), and junior DE Ireland Burke (6-3, 280). Each one of these guys packed on 20-pounds of muscle in the offseason.
Throwback: I mentioned that LB and former QB Ty Hranicka (5-11, 205) suggested his junior backup take his spot as QB because he felt that gives the Lions the best chance to win. That’s a true story but it’s only half of it. The other reason that’s in the best interest of the Lion’s success that Hranicka focus solely on defense. Where last year, Hranicka had to go both ways. Now he’ll be able to rest on offensive series’ which will be problematic for opposing offenses.  Another guy could have played in the leather helmet days is senior LB Ryan Greenhagen (6-1, 215). Greenhagen is a 3rd-year starter who has his head in on every single play.

Prediction

In my opinion, this is the most talented group of players Coach Carlson’s has had since he’s been at Pope John and they are built to hang with this insane schedule. PJ has to face the best teams in the state but before they do that, they are going to have to face three of top teams in the country. They should find themselves in the postseason because eight of ten teams in their section will get in. Once they do, they’ll likely have to face a foe who they’ve already played in the regular season. There is no doubt that this team is capable of getting to MetLife Stadium in December. What’s fun, though, is every single game is going to have a championship vibe to it.
