The Coach

Name: John Power
Skinny: Coach Power is entering his second season as Motown’s head man. He has one of the most expansive coaching resumes in all of Morris-Sussex. He spent his playing days winning championships for Coach Rettino in Union. Then went on to play QB for the University of Georgia in the late 80s and early 90s. After that,  he began his coaching career with stints at big schools like Union, Columbia and Hillside. He even was on the coaching staff at Penn State a few years back. Coach Power is a coaches coach and he’s built for the Group 5 schedule the Colonials have to contend with.
2016 Record: 2-8

The Players

Franchise Player: The heart and sole of this team is senior RB/LB Drew Chilson. Offensively he sets the tone by guaranteeing Motown 4 to 5-yards per carry. He’s a punishing back that only runs north and south. Actually, he only runs north. That allows Coach Power to be very creative with his other skilled players. Defensively, Chilson is equally vital.
Hottest Selling Jersey: Every one will be buying a #3 Jhamil King jersey this season. King’s been playing varsity forever and now that it’s his senior season, he’ll be looking to leave a legacy for himself.
All Unruly Watch: A guy I am looking forward to seeing is junior OL/DL El-amin Bashir. The big man does everything right and has one of the most explosive first steps in Morris-Sussex.
Under the Radar: A guy that will punish teams who don’t double team him is senior WR Nate Estiverne. This guy is a play-maker who can turn a 3rd-and-long into a first down or a touchdown no problem.
Benching the Weight Room: Two guys who will be pushing defenses around will be senior linemen Will Culmone and Thomas Hussey. These two bulked up in the offseason and will use their smarts and veteran experience to make this offense a high scoring machine.
Throwback: Senior QB Jake Buchner such a fun player to watch. He’s the kind of guy who plays big in big spots. Buchner is a Farve-esk kind of guy who can huck it 50-yards down the field or juke players for a 50-yard run.

No team in Morris-Sussex has more of an uphill battle than Motown. The only Group 5 team in the area, they face a few Morris County regulars like Roxbury, Randolph and West Morris (all Group 4 teams), then they go battle against North Jersey Group 5 powerhouses like West Orange, Bloomfield, East Orange, etc. The challenge is they are one of the smallest Group 5 schools in that section. So wins against Group 4 schools don’t carry that many Power Points and losses to Group 5 schools hurt extra hard. Don’t get me wrong, this Motown team is built to win football games. They’ll just need to make sure they navigate these opponents diligently. Winning six games at the 8-game cut off should guarantee them a playoff bid. Five wins could do the trick too but they will likely need a little luck from the Power Point gods. It’s going to be a fun year for the Colonials and if they can get momentum on their side I can see them playing in the Second Season.
