The Coach

Name: Don Morganroth
Skinny: Coach Morganroth has been around the Morris County coaching block over the last decade doing stints in Chatham, Montville and now Whippany Park. After his debut in Whippany, it looks as though he’s found his home. He took the Wildcats to the playoffs for the first time in eons and the positive energy coming from Wildcat Nation is unprecedented. Morganroth is doing it the right way, being extremely active in the youth program all the way up. Whippany Park’s football team has been over due for a change for a long time. I honestly believe Coach Morgs is that change.
2016 Record: 6-4

The Players

Franchise Player: Last season quarterback Luke Papa came on the scene like a bat out of hell. Now he’s a senior veteran who understands the offense like the back of his hand. He’s the king of improvising on the fly so if he sees a miss-match at the line of scrimmage he has no problem changing the play right there. Papa also does a fantastic job of turning a broken play into a 25-yard gain.
Hottest Selling Jersey: Senior DB Mike Roma is total ball hawk in centerfield. Against the run he’s a battering ram and against the pass he floats around like he’s on ice skates. There is no doubt you’ll be seeing fans donning his #30 in the stands.
All Unruly Watch: When you watch WP this season focus on offensive tackle Nick Foglia for a few series. It’s a pleasure to watch this kid work. He blocks three different guys on each play and delivers more pancakes than IHOP. Plus he brings a lot of positive energy to this entire team.
Under the Radar: A guy that has quietly become a deadly assassin is senior WR Justin Keating. He’s big, fast target who fights for every single inch on every single play. He’s not flashy but is very tough. I predict Keating could easily have a 12-14 touchdown season.
Benching the Weight Room: The main reason this team will be sitting in the playoffs come November will be the front line led by senior beefcakes Foglia, Anthony Auriemma and Dean Carlson. These three guys alone represent about 800-pounds of pure power up front. Not to take away from the skill guys of this team but when you have these big men blocking, Coach Morganroth could run for a 1,000 yards.
Throwback: If this team doesn’t have enough studs, the glue that holds it all together is senior MLB/FB Jake Crane. He’s a hard playing guy that could have definitely played in the leather helmet era.

I honestly don’t ever recall so much good energy coming out of Wildcat Nation. The fans, players, coaches…they all have a quiet confidence that is really refreshing for this program. With good reason too. This team is built for now and I have a feeling something really special can happen this season. However, the road is going to be tricky because they’ll likely need every bit of six wins at the 8-game cutoff to earn a spot to the postseason dance. Then, once they get there they will have to figure out how to contend with teams like Lenape Valley, Madison, Mountain Lakes, Hanover Park, Newark Central, Verona, etc. who are all playoff regulars. If the ‘Cats can keep their humble, hard working attitude I can see tons of fans jumping on their bandwagon to help rally them all the way to MetLife Stadium in December.
